Tulum Lobster Festival runs August 21 to 23 in two venues

Registration closes Wednesday for the cooking contests at the Tulum Lobster Festival, three days of competitions and children's activities running August 21 to 23 in Punta Allen and the town center.

The city hall issued the call through its general directorates of Tourism and Economic Development, opening the contests to residents, chefs, home cooks, fishers, students, and anyone else who wants to compete. Mayor Diego Castañón Trejo presented the program this week alongside municipal tourism director Haydée Hernández, who said the festival is meant to widen what the municipality can offer visitors and to place lobster at the center of local cooking.

August sits in the middle of the season. Quintana Roo's Caribbean spiny lobster fishery opened July 1 and stays open until February 28, 2027, under the calendar set by the federal fisheries commission, Conapesca. Punta Allen, the fishing village whose cooperative gave the festival its reason to exist, gets the opening day.

Castañón framed the weekend as a push for economic reactivation and destination promotion, and said the event has become a tradition rooted in Punta Allen.

Punta Allen cooks first

Friday's program opens at the Plaza del Pueblo with the inauguration and sports competitions starting at 11 a.m. The cooking contest is the centerpiece. Entrants build a dish around lobster and may bring in regional products such as icaco, sea grape, and coconut. Plates go before the judges at 5 p.m., scored on creativity, presentation, and flavor. First place takes 4,000 pesos, second 2,500, third 1,500.

Music and popular dance close out the night.

Recycled costumes and a 1,500 peso top prize

The same day brings a children's contest for lobster costumes made mainly from recycled or reused materials. The runway carries its own prize ladder: 1,500 pesos, 1,000, and 500 for the first three places. Registration for the children's categories costs nothing.

Saturday's contest asks for three small, identical portions

On August 22, the cooking moves to the esplanade in front of the Palacio Municipal in Tulum, with judging at 6:30 p.m. The format tightens: each entrant presents three small, identical portions to the panel, which applies the same criteria and prize amounts as Punta Allen.

Saturday and Sunday carry the rest of the program in the municipal seat, with a five-kilometer race, tastings from local restaurants and hotels, group bike rides, folkloric dance, and live music, according to the schedule city hall released this week.

Crayons, watercolors, and a drawing contest

Children can also enter a lobster drawing contest, open to free technique: colored pencils, crayons, markers, watercolors, or paint. The municipality framed it as a way to teach children about the species and the waters it comes from. Prizes match the costume contest at 1,500, 1,000, and 500 pesos.

Entries for the two adult cooking contests stay open until 5 p.m. on Wednesday, August 19. Registration runs through a single municipal phone line.

The cooperative behind the Tulum Lobster Festival

Punta Allen sits inside the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve, and its economy has run on lobster for decades through the Vigía Chico fishing cooperative, whose members have worked the grounds for close to six decades. The 2025 edition, held August 15 to 17 and billed by organizers as the third, was assembled with Amigos de Sian Ka'an, the European Union in Mexico, Slow Food International, and WWF under the Kuxatur Maya Kaan sustainable tourism program. That program added talks on lobster traceability and responsible fishing techniques to the cooking.

An earlier edition produced something that outlived the weekend. In 2023, a lobster-in-coconut dish by Rocío May won the Punta Allen contest and was put forward as a signature dish for the municipality, according to La Jornada Maya.

Prices slumped when the season opened in July

Lobster carries more weight in Quintana Roo than any other catch. Conapesca and the national fisheries charter put the fishery at 55.8% of the state's total fishing production value.

The 2026 season did not start easily. Novedades Quintana Roo reported at the beginning of July that cooperatives were opening to a drop in commercial prices, with demand concentrated on live lobster while the tail market stalled. A festival that draws visitors to buy plates cooked by local hands falls squarely in the middle of that.

Two hours of dirt road, on a good day

Reaching Friday's contest takes planning. Punta Allen sits at the end of an unpaved road that runs roughly 45 kilometers south from the Sian Ka'an entrance arch, past the Tulum hotel zone. Two to three hours is the usual estimate, and heavy rain pushes it further. The reserve charges an access fee at the gate.

With judging at 5 p.m., a same-day round trip means driving that road back after dark. The Saturday and Sunday events sit a short walk from the center of Tulum.

Entries close Wednesday at 5 p.m. on 984 212 2583. Two days later, the first plates go to the judges at the Plaza del Pueblo, roughly 45 kilometers of dirt road from the Palacio Municipal, where the contest repeats on Saturday.
