Delta flights to Tulum will continue to depart from Atlanta daily this winter, through May 2, 2027, then stop until November, when the airline plans to restart the route as seasonal service only.
The carrier confirmed the change in a statement reported by Milenio. "Delta flights to TQO (Tulum) from ATL (Atlanta) are expected to resume in November 2027. The operation to TQO will move to an exclusively seasonal service," the airline said. It has not given a restart date.
Atlanta is the only route Delta still flies to Tulum, and Delta was the first U.S. airline to commit to the new airport. For anyone booking a spring or summer 2027 trip, and for the hotels and tour operators now selling those months, the change narrows nonstop options from the United States at a moment when several other carriers are also leaving.
Delta flights to Tulum run daily until May 2, with a midwinter gap
The schedule Delta described runs from November 22, 2026, to May 2, 2027, with one exception. Between January 12 and March 3, there will be no flights on Tuesdays or Wednesdays, which brings the route to five weekly departures during those seven weeks.
Delta had already scaled back its low-season plan. A Saturday-only service had been scheduled from May 3 to July 31, 2027. That service "will be canceled permanently," the airline said.
The result is a gap of roughly six months with no Delta service at all between Atlanta and Tulum.
Atlanta was the first U.S. link to the new airport
Delta announced the route in October 2023 and began flying it on March 28, 2024, as a daily, year-round service on Boeing 737-800 aircraft. Through its Atlanta hub, the airline pitched one-stop connections to Tulum from more than 100 U.S. cities. The Tulum Times covered that launch as the airport prepared to open to international traffic.
The network has been shrinking since. In August 2025, Delta removed the seasonal Detroit and Minneapolis–St. Paul flights it had planned to start in January 2026, one weekly each, saying at the time that it routinely adjusts its network to match demand. Atlanta became its only Tulum route, and it is now becoming seasonal as well.
United leaves in January, three days before American drops Miami
Delta's decision follows a run of announcements from other airlines serving Tulum, most of them taking effect in the first week of January.
- United Airlines operates its last Newark to Tulum flight on January 2, 2027, and its last Houston flight on January 4. The airline had already ended its Chicago and Los Angeles service, and the January dates complete its exit from the airport
- American Airlines suspends its Miami to Tulum route on January 5, 2027, and keeps its Dallas-Fort Worth service
- Volaris stops operating at Tulum on January 7, 2027
- Aeroméxico ended its Tulum flights on September 30, 2026, citing market conditions, and has described the suspension as temporary
Milenio also lists Copa and Avianca among the airlines no longer operating at the terminal.
One scheduled U.S. nonstop for the summer of 2027
Once United leaves in January, only two U.S. airlines will fly nonstop to Tulum, American from Dallas-Fort Worth and Delta from Atlanta, as Upgraded Points has noted. With Delta pausing on May 3, the schedules announced so far leave American's Dallas service as the only U.S. nonstop into Tulum from May until Delta's return in November.
Airlines revise their schedules throughout the year, and that picture could change in either direction before summer.
Winter is fuller. Air Canada, WestJet, and Air Transat resumed flights to Tulum in late October and are scheduled to continue through March 2027. Domestic service from Mexicana and Viva Aerobus was operating daily as of October. Cancún International Airport, about two hours north by highway, remains the region's main gateway, with nonstop service from dozens of U.S. cities.
Passenger traffic fell 33.2 percent in the first half of 2026
The airline's decisions track a terminal that has been losing passengers for more than a year. Figures from the Agencia Federal de Aviación Civil, reported by Líder Empresarial, show passenger movement at Tulum down 33.2 percent in the first six months of 2026. Grupo Animal, citing industry reports, says the airport went from 12 international routes to four.
The reasons carriers give vary. Volaris pointed to low demand and airport costs, according to El CEO. El Financiero has reported that the airport's administration withdrew the incentives new airports usually offer airlines in their first years, and that carriers began leaving once those discounts ended. Jet fuel costs have also climbed sharply this year.
The airport opened on December 15, 2023, under the military-run Grupo Mundo Maya and surpassed 1 million passengers in its first year.
Grupo Mundo Maya says it is still working on connectivity
In recent days, the operator said it would continue its work to improve air connectivity and strengthen the country's southeast. It has not announced a new airline or route to replace the service ending in January and May.
The next fixed date is January 2, when United's last flight leaves Newark. The one still missing is the day in November 2027 when Delta's Atlanta flights return, and the airline has not said when it will publish it.
