The First American Airline With Direct Flights to Tulum

TULUM, Mexico – In a significant development for travelers seeking a convenient route to Tulum, Delta Air Lines has announced a game-changing addition to its global route map. Starting on March 28, 2024, Delta will inaugurate a new daily, year-round flight from its mega-hub in Atlanta to Tulum International Airport (TQO).

The airline’s decision to introduce this route comes as a breath of fresh air for those who have frequented Tulum, as historically, reaching this tropical paradise involved flying into Cancun and then embarking on a lengthy drive to reach your destination. This option was not the most appealing due to both time and cost factors. With private transfers costing around $100 and adding approximately 90 minutes or more to the overall travel journey, it was far from ideal.

However, all this is about to change with Delta’s new service. This airline is set to become the first U.S. carrier to announce flights to Tulum. This development is made possible by the imminent opening of the brand-new Tulum International Airport, also known as Felipe Carrillo Puerto International Airport, in December 2023. This airport’s opening is expected to be a game-changer for travel to the region.

Delta’s new route to Tulum will be operated using a Boeing 737-800 aircraft, featuring 16 first-class recliners, 36 extra-legroom Comfort+ seats, and 108 standard economy seats. This offers a variety of options for passengers to choose from, making the journey comfortable and enjoyable.

Tulum, long known for its pristine beaches, boutique hotels, Mayan ruins, and eco-friendly spirit, is set to become even more accessible and alluring with this development. It’s a location that many travelers have yearned to visit, and now, Delta is poised to make those dreams a reality.

While Delta may be the first U.S. carrier to announce flights to Tulum, it is highly likely that others will follow suit in the future. American and United Airlines could be the next contenders to offer flights to this enchanting destination. Additionally, the prospect of big ultra-low-cost carriers like Frontier and Spirit entering the Tulum market is a possibility. Only time will reveal the exact lineup of carriers serving this route.

As Delta prepares to launch its flights to Tulum, there is anticipation that introductory fares will reflect its monopoly on the Atlanta to Tulum route. Travelers will soon be able to book these flights, with availability expected by Monday, October 16.

Joe Esposito, Senior Vice President of Network Planning at Delta, expressed the significance of this new route, stating, “Delta is uniquely positioned to give customers convenient and direct access from the U.S. to Tulum, a premium leisure destination known for its boutique hotels, Mayan ruins, and eco-friendly spirit. We know Tulum-bound customers will enjoy the elevated experience Delta consistently offers – and now without a two-hour drive from Cancun – as we grow our footprint in Mexico and throughout the Yucatan region.”

This exciting development opens new doors for travelers, making Tulum even more accessible and enhancing the overall experience of exploring this beautiful Mexican destination. Delta’s entry into the Tulum market is a promising sign for the future of travel to this enchanting locale, and it will undoubtedly be a welcomed change for those seeking a hassle-free journey to Tulum’s shores.
