The 2026 Atlantic hurricane season has three systems under watch for possible cyclone development, the Servicio Meteorológico Nacional reported Sunday morning, the closest of which is 2,840 kilometers east-northeast of Quintana Roo.
None of the three is near enough to produce weather on the Yucatán Peninsula, and no advisory was issued for Mexican coasts. The report still carries weight for anyone living on this coastline because it arrives during the stretch of the calendar when the Atlantic basin historically generates most of its storms, and because the state civil protection office attached its own request to the update.
Three low-pressure areas, from 2,840 to 6,990 kilometers out
The closest of the three sits in the central Atlantic, 2,840 kilometers, or roughly 1,765 miles, east-northeast of the Quintana Roo coast. The SMN puts its chance of cyclone development at 20 percent over 48 hours and 30 percent over seven days. It is drifting west-northwest, slowly.
The second is far more distant and moving in the opposite direction. Located in the northeastern Atlantic, 6,990 kilometers (about 4,343 miles) east-northeast of the state, it has a 10 percent chance of development in both the 48-hour and seven-day windows. It is traveling east-northeast at 16 to 24 kilometers per hour, between 10 and 15 miles per hour. Every hour it moves takes it farther from the Caribbean.
The third does not exist yet. The SMN anticipates that a low-pressure area will form south of the Cape Verde Islands, and assigns it a 50 percent probability of cyclone development within seven days. That is the highest figure in Sunday's bulletin, attached to the system that has not yet appeared.
The numbers had shifted from the previous morning. Saturday's 6:00 a.m. report placed the nearest system 3,040 kilometers east-northeast, with 10 percent odds at 48 hours and 20 percent at seven days, and gave the West Africa area 30 percent over seven days. Both figures climbed by Sunday.
Sunday's rain over the peninsula came from tropical wave 31
None of the three watched systems produced any weather in Quintana Roo. The showers that crossed the peninsula on Sunday came from tropical wave number 31 and a mid-level trough, which the Centro Hidrometeorológico Regional in Mérida forecast would bring locally heavy rain to the northern part of the state, along with electrical activity and reduced visibility.
Tropical waves roll off the African coast and cross the Atlantic all season. Most of them never organize into anything. A handful become the systems that eventually get names.
Coeproc asked residents to check the source before sharing
The Coordinación Estatal de Protección Civil de Quintana Roo shared the SMN update on its social channels and repeated a request it has made throughout the season. Consult official information. The bulletin identifies areas with cyclone potential, and that is all it does. It forecasts no storm, no track, and no landfall.
The distinction is easy to lose online, where a seven-day probability map is simple to screenshot and difficult to caption accurately. Coeproc asked residents to avoid circulating unverified material and to follow only the advisories issued by the authorities.
El Niño has held the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season below normal
Three names have come off the Atlantic list this year. Arthur formed in mid-June in the Gulf off the Texas coast and left record rainfall across Louisiana. Bertha came ashore in St. Bernard Parish, Louisiana, on July 22. Cristobal appeared on August 12 in the central subtropical Atlantic, roughly halfway between Bermuda and the Azores, and dissipated within about two days without approaching land. None of the three reached hurricane strength.
In its August update, NOAA raised the probability of a below-normal season from 55 percent to 75 percent and narrowed its forecast to between seven and thirteen named storms, of which two to six could become hurricanes, and zero to two could reach major hurricane intensity. Forecasters point to El Niño, which strengthens vertical wind shear over the Atlantic and pulls developing systems apart before they can organize. Should the season close without a Category 3 or stronger storm, it would be the first time since 2013.
August has been slow. NOAA's climatology still places the statistical peak of the Atlantic season around September 10, and the calendar runs to November 30.
The name Dolly has crossed Quintana Roo twice before
Naming lists rotate on a six-year cycle, which means the same names return regularly. Two earlier storms called Dolly reached this coastline. The 1996 version made landfall near Chetumal as a Category 1 hurricane before crossing into the Bay of Campeche. In July 2008, a second Dolly came ashore on the peninsula near Cancún as a tropical storm and later strengthened to Category 2 over the Gulf.
The repetition carries no forecasting weight whatsoever. Names are assigned in the order storms form, and the label says nothing about where a system will travel.
The SMN publishes its Atlantic outlook every morning. The figures worth watching this week are those for the Cape Verde area, which the service will update daily as the system either organizes or falls apart. If it reaches tropical storm strength, it becomes Dolly.
