Tulum tourism officials outlined strategies to maintain the destination's competitive position during this week's Tianguis Turístico in Acapulco, emphasizing event diversification and infrastructure development as European visitor patterns shift.

Mario Cruz Rodríguez, president of Tulum's Tourism Promotion and Economic Development Trust, and Aide Pastrana, director general of tourism for the municipal government, presented separate but complementary approaches focused on expanding the destination's appeal beyond traditional beach tourism.

Recent sporting events including a NASCAR exhibition and air show generated increased hotel occupancy over the weekend before the tourism trade fair, according to Cruz. The events took place alongside a PGA golf tournament at Gran Valla Príncipe.

Festival Calendar Targets Year-Round Visitation

The municipal tourism office has scheduled festivals throughout 2026 designed to attract visitors during traditionally slower periods. The Lobster Festival in Punta Allen connects tourists with fishing cooperatives in the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve, while the Parrilla Festival in September features chefs preparing grilled specialties along coastal venues.

Smaller cultural events include a trova music festival on May 8 featuring Fernando Delgadillo and a honey festival on May 21 highlighting artisan producers from Maya communities. The Hanal Pixán celebration in October closes sections of the hotel zone for Day of the Dead altars and cultural programming.

Pastrana noted that the festival strategy responds to visitor demand for experiences beyond resort amenities. Restaurants including Arca, Méjico, and Casa Banana have received recognition in international dining guides, supporting the positioning of Tulum as a gastronomic destination.

Infrastructure Additions Change Access Patterns

Tulum International Airport now operates with direct flights from carriers including Delta and Viva, reducing travel time to approximately 20 minutes from the terminal to hotel zones. The airport opened as part of federal infrastructure investment in the region.

Two Maya Train stations serve Tulum, connecting the destination to the broader Yucatán Peninsula rail network. Plaza Las Américas Centro, a commercial development, is scheduled to open later this year.

Cruz acknowledged that European visitor numbers have declined, attributing the change to unspecified conflict affecting travel patterns from that market. The trust is adjusting promotional efforts to target domestic Mexican travelers and markets in the Americas.

Community Tourism Routes Expand Product Range

The municipal government supports tourism routes through Maya villages where artisans produce embroidered garments and honey-based products. Pastrana brought samples of locally made textiles and honey to the trade fair to demonstrate the community tourism offerings.

Archaeological sites Tulum and Cobá anchor heritage tourism, with Cobá's 42-meter pyramid identified as the tallest Maya structure in the peninsula. The destination markets approximately 300 cenotes, including Casa Tortuga, Dos Ojos, and Jak Schmul, for nature-based activities.

Punta Allen, a fishing village within the Sian Ka'an reserve, attracts visitors interested in marine ecosystems and lobster harvesting traditions. The Nopalitos and Canlú lagoons provide additional water-based recreational options.

Coordination Strategy Involves Multiple Agencies

Both officials emphasized collaboration with state and federal tourism authorities. Cruz specifically acknowledged Secretary of Tourism Josefina Rodríguez for support in addressing destination needs.

The state government's "Capital Mundial de las Vacaciones" campaign provides an umbrella framework for individual destination marketing, according to Cruz. Private sector organizations including the trust work alongside municipal and state agencies to coordinate promotional activities.

Pastrana described the municipal government's role as supporting infrastructure for events while facilitating connections between artisan communities and tourism operators. The approach attempts to distribute economic benefits beyond hotel zone properties.
