Gunmen Kill Man Known as El Moreno in Tulum's Second Homicide in Four Days

A man known by the alias El Moreno was shot and killed Sunday night outside his home in the Carlos Joaquín González neighborhood, the second fatal shooting in Tulum in four days.

The attack happened on Calle Ixchel at its crossing with Avenida Yaxchilán, near the Encanto condominium, according to preliminary reports. The attackers fired at least five rounds and escaped on motorcycles before police reached the corner. The Fiscalía General del Estado de Quintana Roo opened a homicide investigation.

The case puts security conditions in the municipality under fresh scrutiny in the middle of the summer vacation season, while the government of Mayor Diego Castañón Trejo has centered much of its public messaging on security advances. As of Monday, authorities had announced no arrests and no motive.

At least five shots on Calle Ixchel

The victim was standing outside the property when armed individuals approached and opened fire, according to the first reports from the scene. Initial accounts describe him as originally from the state of Tabasco, and several outlets identified him as El Moreno de Tabasco. His legal identity has not been established, and authorities have released no age or other personal details.

The corner where he died sits inside Carlos Joaquín González, one of the irregular settlements that have grown along with Tulum's population, and the gunfire went off steps from occupied homes. Neighbors who heard the detonations called the emergency line to report a person wounded by a firearm.

No arrests so far

Paramedics from the Mexican Red Cross evaluated the man at the address and confirmed he no longer had vital signs.

Municipal police officers and state units cordoned off the block and restricted access to keep possible evidence intact, while a search operation moved through the surrounding streets to try to locate those responsible.

It produced no reported detentions.

Four days after another fatal Tulum shooting

The killing follows an armed attack on the night of Wednesday, August 5, when a man identified in local reports as Gerardo N., known by the aliases El Gato and El Güero, was shot while driving a Ford Mustang through the La Veleta neighborhood, on Calle 2 Sur between Calles 33 and 3 Poniente. Two men on a motorcycle fired repeatedly at the driver, his car struck the facade of a building, and he died at the scene.

Both attacks happened at night, in residential areas of the municipal seat, with aggressors who escaped on motorcycles. Neither has produced an announced arrest.

Municipal authorities have spent months emphasizing security advances in public, and, days earlier, Mayor Castañón announced the dismissal of eight municipal police officers over acts of corruption, according to the regional outlet Riviera Maya News. The two homicides in four days land against that message, in the stretch of the year when the local economy depends most directly on residents and visitors feeling safe.

The autopsy will settle the victim's legal name

Agents of the Policía de Investigación and forensic personnel from the state prosecutor's office processed the scene and collected evidence for the case file. Once those diligences concluded, the Forensic Medical Service removed the body and transferred it to its facilities for the legally required autopsy.

That examination will anchor the official identification of a victim who has been named publicly only by his alias. The Fiscalía has not said whether it connects the attack to the La Veleta case or to any other open investigation.

The open questions now belong to the state prosecutor's office. It must establish how the attack unfolded, who fired, and the legal name of the man his neighbors knew as El Moreno.
