Witnesses Say the Only Thing That Stopped a Tulum Gunman Was a Falling Magazine

The attack on a Tulum tortilla shop lasted seconds and left no one hurt. A man arrived by motorcycle, drew a gun, and lost his magazine to the pavement, according to witnesses at the scene.

He did not stop to pick it up. The preliminary account circulating among people who were there holds that the man turned back toward the motorcycle, climbed on, and rode off along Sol Oriente, between Orión and Beta Sur, in the Centro neighborhood. The business, identified by witnesses as the tortillería LuLú, sits within the first blocks of the city grid, on a stretch where small food businesses open early and stay busy into the evening.

Nobody was injured. Nobody has been detained. No state or municipal authority has issued a public statement confirming that a shot was even attempted, which leaves the whole episode resting on the testimony of people standing on the sidewalk when it happened. For a commercial block that has already survived one armed attack, that silence carries weight.

A dropped magazine ended the Tulum tortilla shop attack

The sequence described by witnesses is short. The man rode up, dismounted, and pulled out a firearm. As he brought it up, the magazine came loose and fell into the roadway. Without it, a semiautomatic pistol cannot feed rounds into the chamber, and the weapon becomes close to useless in the seconds an attacker has.

The magazine stayed where it landed, on the public street, in full view of the people who had just watched it fall.

Officers cordoned off Sol Oriente to preserve the evidence

Police corporations mobilized to the address after the emergency report came in. Officers closed off the immediate area to preserve any physical evidence and began collecting accounts from nearby residents, focusing on two questions in particular: who the man was and which route he took out of Centro.

Agents from the Policía de Investigación and personnel from Servicios Periciales were expected at the site to process the scene. Whatever was recovered from the roadway will pass through them first.

Two accounts differ on who the gunman was aiming at

The versions circulating do not agree on the target. One holds that the man pointed the weapon at a specific person who was inside the establishment. Another holds that he aimed at the business itself.

The distinction is not cosmetic. An attempt against a named individual and an attack on a storefront point to different motives, lines of investigation, and legal classifications. Neither version has been confirmed by any authority, and the source material available describes both. Until the Fiscalía General del Estado establishes which account the evidence supports, the question stays open.

The same corner saw a fatal shooting in 2021

The address is not new to this. In late July 2021, local outlets reported that armed men attacked workers at the tortillería Lulú on Sol Oriente at the corner of Orión Sur, shortly before 6:45 in the evening. One man died after being taken to a private clinic. At least two others were wounded, with some reports putting the number of injured higher. The attackers were not located.

That case unfolded roughly three blocks from the municipal palace, in the same first square of the city where officers cordoned the street this time.

No authority has drawn any link between the two episodes, and none of the available material establishes that the business operating there now is under the same ownership as it had in 2021. The record shows an address and a business name that have appeared before in a police report. It shows nothing more than that, and readers should not be asked to treat a shared corner as a shared motive.

No arrests, no injuries, and no official statement yet

As of this report, there are no detainees connected to the incident, no injured parties, and no confirmation from the Fiscalía or from municipal security that a firearm was discharged or that a discharge was attempted. Everything above the level of the police mobilization itself comes from witnesses.

What comes back from Servicios Periciales will decide how much of the account survives. If the magazine was secured as evidence, investigators have a physical object with serial characteristics, possible prints, and ammunition to compare against other open cases in the municipality. If it was not recovered, the file rests on testimony and on whatever cameras along Sol Oriente were pointed the right way.

The Fiscalía has not said whether it has opened a carpeta de investigación, or under what classification.
