Boxing in Tulum gains ground as a sports alternative for the population. The recent opening of the Boxy Factory academy at the Arena Coliseo Maya consolidates a new space for training and discipline.
The initiative, which began operations three weeks ago, not only expands the physical training infrastructure in the municipality but seeks to structure the growing interest of young people in contact sports. This effort represents a step in the professionalization of local athletic activities, shifting away from an exclusively recreational focus to incorporate competitive standards.
According to Marco Dianas, known in the sports field as "Conan" and direct manager of the project, the initial response shows real demand. Currently, around 25 people have joined the training cycles. The group is diverse and includes amateur practitioners, professionals in training, and citizens looking for rigorous physical activity.
Although attendance fluctuates due to the work dynamics typical of a tourist municipality and the physical adaptation period that boxing requires, the flow of participants maintains an upward trend. The conditioning of this space was possible after the formal delivery of the facilities by Rodrigo Lavispa, an administrative step that allowed the arena to be activated as a permanent training center.
A Controlled Environment for Sports Development
The main focus of Boxy Factory is to provide a supervised environment where youth and adults can train safely. In the context of rapid growth, the availability of accessible and structured sports spaces fulfills an important social function, offering alternatives for personal development and discipline.
The classes are designed under a mixed scheme and are accessible to participants from six years of age, without an upper limit. To facilitate community integration, the training sessions are divided into two time blocks a morning shift from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. and an evening shift from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. The monthly cost has been set at one thousand pesos, with options for individual sessions at 200 pesos. In addition, the project implements promotional schemes for families, seeking to encourage joint participation between parents and children.
Boosting Combat Sports in the Region
Beyond daily training, the Arena Coliseo Maya is in a process of consolidation as a regular venue for combat events in the Mexican southeast. The infrastructure of the place allows the organization of weekend functions that attract both local talent and foreign competitors.
A recent example of this organizational capacity was a Muay Thai function that included the participation of athletes from Canada, China, and various regions of Mexico. The event stood out not only for its international character but for the dispute of belts endorsed by the World Boxing Council (WBC), which grants official validity and prestige to the competitions held at the venue.
For the short term, the arena administrators plan to diversify the billboard. The agenda for the coming days includes professional lucha libre functions and the programming of new boxing evenings. This strategy has a dual objective. The first is to maintain the motivation and competitive rhythm of the academy students, and the second is to strengthen the interest of the local public in in-person sports events.
The convergence of a continuous training academy and a stage for international competitions suggests that Tulum could be developing a sustainable niche in sports tourism and high-performance athlete training, adding a new dimension to its urban profile.
