Tulum Mayor Diego Castañón Trejo toured the soccer field at the city's Unidad Deportiva and confirmed a full rehabilitation, including new goals, perimeter fencing, paint work, and upgraded benches.
The field sits inside the Unidad Deportiva, the main public sports complex serving residents of the municipality, and it hosts players of all ages on a daily basis. The walkthrough is the step that will define the final scope of the project, which city hall says must deliver dignified and functional conditions for the people who actually use the space.
What the Tulum Soccer Field Rehabilitation Includes
Christian Moguel, who outlined the project during the visit, said the plan calls for a comprehensive rehabilitation of the complex's eleven-a-side field. The work covers the renovation of both goals, the replacement of the perimeter mesh fence, painting throughout the facility, and improvements to the benches used by players and spectators.
An eleven-a-side field is the full-size format of the sport, which makes this pitch the backbone of organized soccer at the complex. Leagues, training sessions, and casual weekend matches all depend on it, so the condition of the goals, the fencing, and the seating shapes the experience of nearly everyone who passes through the Unidad Deportiva.
A Walkthrough Before the Project Is Finalized
Castañón toured the facility accompanied by municipal officials, with the stated purpose of verifying the building's needs firsthand before the project is locked in. The city describes the goal as an integral and efficient design that responds to the demands of daily users rather than a cosmetic touch-up.
"We are going to rehabilitate the soccer field at the Unidad Deportiva. That is why we are carrying out this walkthrough, to put together a very good project," Castañón said in remarks translated from Spanish.
The mayor added that his administration will keep pushing public works tied to everyday wellbeing. "We will keep delivering results so that everything is reflected in the health, security, and wellbeing of the citizens," he said.

Sport as Health, Safety, and Social Policy
City hall is framing the project as more than maintenance. The administration presents sports infrastructure as a tool for public health, for safety, and for social cohesion, and it ties this rehabilitation to a broader commitment to recover public spaces where children, teenagers, and adults can train and gather.
That framing carries weight in a municipality where rapid growth has strained public services and where free, open recreational space is scarce compared to the private amenities concentrated in the tourist corridor. For families living in Tulum's residential zones, the Unidad Deportiva is one of the few large facilities built for them rather than for visitors.
No Start Date, Budget, or Contractor Yet
The announcement leaves several practical questions open. The city said only that the rehabilitation will begin soon, without committing to a start date or a completion timeline. No budget figure, funding source, or contractor has been disclosed, and officials did not say whether the field will close to the public while the work is underway.
Those details should surface once the project moves from walkthrough to final design. Until then, the announcement stands as a statement of intent, and the players who show up to the field every afternoon will be the first to know whether the new goals, fencing, and benches arrive as promised.
