For the past decade, the Tulum Rotary Club has dedicated itself to community service in the Mayan village of Yaxché. It was within this vibrant yet resilient community that former Club President Claudia Munoz first connected with the family of a young man named Gervasio. Over the years, this initial relationship deepened, allowing the club to support his family with essential medical and educational assistance. When Gervasio graduated from high school, a new door opened: an opportunity to study at a university in Valladolid.

Initially hesitant to let him leave the village, his parents were ultimately convinced that this path could transform his life, and by extension, create a positive ripple effect throughout their entire community. This pivotal moment marked Gervasio as the club’s first scholarship student and laid the foundation for the Indigenous Scholarship Fund. Today, that ambitious initiative has grown significantly, proudly supporting nine dedicated students.

The Duality of Hope and Hardship

Gervasio’s journey vividly reflects the duality of hope and hardship prevalent in Yaxché. Raised in a household with limited resources, he confronted numerous obstacles throughout his formative years. However, his pursuit of knowledge remained unwavering. With steadfast encouragement from local educators and the continued backing of the Rotary Club’s initiatives, Gervasio harnessed his potential. He successfully applied for the scholarships that would ultimately enable him to attend university.

The ten-year commitment to Yaxché has allowed the Rotary Club to forge meaningful, enduring relationships within the community. These deep local ties ultimately led the organization to Gervasio, a young man who truly embodies the spirit of perseverance and the transformative power of community support.

Empowering the Next Generation of Hospitality Leaders

Understanding the vital economic role of tourism in the Riviera Maya, Gervasio pursued a degree in hotel management and administration. Today, he is employed at a deluxe hotel within the prestigious Xcaret group. This position not only grants him financial independence but also enables him to acquire invaluable experience within the hospitality sector, an industry that is essential for economic growth across Quintana Roo.

Through his academic dedication and professional achievements, Gervasio demonstrates how education translates directly into practical success. This combination of determination and skill positions him as an aspiring leader, one capable of uplifting others from similar backgrounds and inspiring the next generation of Mayan professionals.

The Future of the Indigenous Scholarship Fund

Today, the scholarship program has evolved into a comprehensive community support system. Every student in the program is paired with a Rotary member mentor, ensuring they receive the ongoing guidance and encouragement they need to succeed. To maintain their funding, students hold themselves to a high standard of academic excellence, requiring a minimum GPA of 8.5 out of 10.

These ambitious scholars are actively pursuing careers across a variety of critical fields, including tourism, architecture, nursing, languages, and accounting. As the Indigenous Scholarship Fund continues to grow, it remains a testament to the fact that when a community unites to provide opportunity, the resulting impact can transform lives for generations to come.
