Tulum Hotels Introduce Drug Awareness Signatures

TULUM, Mexico—The Tulum Hotel Association, in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism, is poised to introduce an additional preventive measure to further safeguard tourists and reinforce the message against illegal drug use. Soon, guests staying at properties affiliated with the Tulum Hotel Association may be presented with an informational document to sign upon check-in. This document explicitly outlines the legalities surrounding the purchase and consumption of drugs in Mexico, serving as a formal declaration of the visitor’s understanding of these laws.

As reported by The Tulum Times, the initiative is currently awaiting approval. Once sanctioned, it aims to significantly diminish drug-related incidents among tourists in Tulum, addressing a longstanding issue within the town. The document, prepared in both English and Spanish, succinctly informs travelers of the severe consequences that accompany drug offenses in Mexico, including potential imprisonment. By signing this page, guests acknowledge their awareness and comprehension of the Mexican law’s stance on drug use, underlining the zero-tolerance policy enforced throughout the country.

The notice clarifies, “Drugs in Mexico are illegal. Don’t be misled into thinking that purchase or use is allowed or tolerated. The purchase of illicit drugs in Mexico is a crime punishable by imprisonment. Don’t put yourself at risk. Drug dealers on beaches and nightclubs will get you into trouble. They are not your friends; they are criminals. This is an informative document that the visitor must sign to confirm being aware of the information therein.”

Carla Patricia Andrade Piedras, Director of the Tulum Hotel Association, emphasized the importance of integrating this document into the hotel check-in process as a formal notification to guests that the consumption of illicit substances is unequivocally illegal in Mexico.

This proposed policy coincides with the launch of new air routes to Tulum’s recently inaugurated Aeropuerto Internacional de Tulum Felipe Carrillo Puerto. Major airlines like Spirit, American, United, and JetBlue are expanding their services to this burgeoning destination. The move reflects Tulum’s growing popularity as a tourist hotspot while showcasing a commitment to maintaining a safe and secure environment for its visitors.

By introducing such measures, Tulum aims not only to protect its visitors but also to preserve the integrity and allure of its natural and cultural heritage, ensuring that it remains a prime destination for tourists seeking both relaxation and adventure.
