Safety Over Silence Tulum’s Stand Against Crime

TULUM, Mexico – In a unified call for action following a tragic double homicide at the Taboo establishment on March 15, Tulum’s business sector is demanding that federal, state, and local authorities implement stringent measures to bolster security within the municipality. This plea comes from the heart of the Mexican Caribbean Hotel Council, under the leadership of Antonio Cháves Palomo and Vice President Jaime David Ortíz Mena López, who have directly addressed vital figures such as Rosa Icela Rodríguez, Secretary of Public Security; Mara Lezama, Governor of Quintana Roo; Raciel López, the Attorney General; and Tulum Mayor Diego Castañón.

The letter articulates the business community’s deep concern and condemnation of the criminal incidents, highlighting an urgent call for reevaluating and strengthening supervision and control measures governing local establishments’ operations. Despite restrictions on nighttime operating hours, criminal activities persist, now creeping into daylight hours, suggesting a dynamic shift that demands a change in regulatory oversight and crime prevention strategies.

Preliminary investigations by the Prosecutor’s Office suggest that the incident is likely connected to drug dealing activities. In response, the business community advocates for harsh, exemplary, and effective penalties against establishments that repeatedly violate operating regulations, including the possibility of permanent closure for those engaging in practices detrimental to the community and Tulum’s natural and cultural environment. They also call for establishing clear and practical legal mechanisms to prevent the reopening of any establishments that have been partially or fully closed due to causing harm.

Echoing these sentiments, the Quintana Roo Citizen Security and Justice Board, a civil society organization, and the National Chamber of the Restaurant and Seasoned Food Industry (CANIRAC) have expressed their support for these measures. Both entities emphasize the negative impact of such incidents on visitor security perception and the destination’s overall reputation, underscoring the importance of taking necessary actions to ensure peace and safeguard the well-being of residents and tourists alike.

The incident at Taboo is not an isolated event but a symptom of underlying issues that need to be addressed through collective effort and robust, transparent governance. By implementing effective crime prevention strategies and enforcing strict regulations, Tulum can move towards a future where its natural and cultural treasures can be enjoyed without the shadow of insecurity looming over them.

In the wake of this tragic event, it is crucial for all stakeholders, including government authorities, business owners, residents, and visitors, to come together in a shared commitment to Tulum’s safety and prosperity.
