Where is there more sargassum in 2023? In Cancun, Playa del Carmen or Tulum?

The sargassum season came early in most of the state of Quintana Roo, an entity that has some of the most popular destinations in the country and the world, such is the case of Cancun, Playa del Carmen and Tulum. As Easter Week approaches, many travelers choose these coastal cities to vacation and spend a few happy and relaxing days, however, it is important to take into account that this year 2023 the presence of sargassum has been detected in several beaches ahead of schedule.

According to reports from authorities and the hotel sector, the sargassum has begun to be seen in several coasts since February, although in concrete terms the 2023 sargassum season begins between April and May, it has been brought forward, so many travelers who had already planned their vacations for these dates are wondering which is the least affected destination, in The Tulum Times we answer your doubts.

The state of Quintana Roo has a variety of places and destinations to enjoy 365 days a year. But it is no secret that the beaches of the Mexican Caribbean are part of its biggest attractions, there are three cities with the most frequented beaches, Cancun, Playa del Carmen and Tulum, but all of them are affected by sargassum every year.

If you travel to Mexico and your destination is the coasts of Quintana Roo, keep in mind that the beaches are affected by sargassum between April and September, while this year 2023 the presence of the algae has been brought forward, so you can already start to see sargassum on the main beaches of the state.

Regarding the amount of seaweed, this varies in each region, Cancun continues to be the city with less presence of sargassum until February, it is expected that during the advance of March sargassum will increase in Cancun and its beaches, according to the reports of national and international monitoring of sargassum.

However, in comparison to Cancun, there is more presence of sargassum on the beaches of Playa del Carmen and Tulum, as most of the analyses point to abundant and excessive records of the algae, being the Riviera Maya section the most worrisome, only four beaches in the north of the state report no presence of sargassum, all in Isla Mujeres: Chiquilá, Isla Contoy, Isla Mujeres Playa Centro and Playa Sur.
