Restructuring of the Tulum National Park will include additional beach access points

Tulum, Q.R. — Additional public beach access points are on the municipal city council agenda for next year. Román Meyer Falcón, head of the Secretariat of Agrarian, Territorial and Urban Development (Sedatu) for Tulum, said that there are several key points on next year’s agenda, one of which is to open three more beach access points.

He said the municipality is looking into restructuring the beach area of the Tulum National Park, which will include the additional access points. He said the municipality is also looking into relocating 170 tourist servers, the addition of new infrastructure and putting a stop to irregular construction in the Natural Protected Area.

He pointed to the area of Playa Santa Fe, where he says, President of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador has ordered the illegal processes to be stopped. The most common issues include the construction of private fences as well as other illegal building and the placement of beach furniture that obstructs free passage.

Meyer Falcón also said that the city council has reviewed 170 modules of tourist services ranging from public bathrooms to boat tours and coconut vendors, all of whom will be negotiated with to ensure the additional beach access points.

He mentioned that access is particularly problematic from the road on Cobá Avenue due to a lack of safe parking. In order to restore mobility, he says the municipality is considering infrastructure to encourage walking (pedestrians) and cycling, while also encouraging the use of public transport and no longer allowing private vehicles.

Next year, he says the municipality has set a goal to have seven public beach access points open along the 3.2 kilometer stretch of beach in the National Park. Once land agreements are made, the new public beaches will offer bathroom and shower services.
