Tulum mourns the death of municipal president Marciano Dzul Caamal

This Saturday morning, March 4, the family of Marciano Dzul Caamal, municipal president of Tulum for Movimiento Regeneración Nacional (Morena), confirmed the death of the public official, which occurred inside a clinic in Monterrey, Nuevo León where he had been hospitalized after being diagnosed with prostate cancer, a disease that led to health problems and finally took his life at the age of 53.

According to official information, Marciano Dzul Caamal was diagnosed a month ago and since then, he had stayed away from public and political life in order to take care of his health; however, the disease was stronger and did not allow him to show any improvement or even return to the municipality he headed since September 2021, when he assumed the position he was scheduled to leave until 2024.

“During the early hours of the morning, the father, husband, brother, uncle, friend and human being who always gave his heart for the people left us; there is no consolation for those of us who love him and know him, but we know that for those who love him without knowing him, there is no consolation either”, reads the letter sent by the mayor’s family.

On February 28th, Quintana Roo state senator, Marybel Villegas, confirmed that the mayor of Tulum was in serious health as a result of cancer; however, she did not elaborate on the details. It is known that the mayor had already governed the municipality since 2009 and until 2011, although he did so for the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) and after that, in the 2018 elections he sought to occupy this position, although he lost the race, leaving Víctor Más as president and the latter as councilor.

It was in the elections of 2021 when he tried again to become municipal president, now for Morena, obtaining the favor of the electorate, an action that led him to be the first person to become the person who had been at the head of the municipality the most times. With his death, the law indicates that Diego Castañón, who serves as treasurer, will take his place until the next elections are held.
