Tulum joins the Open Cities Global Initiative: a step towards sustainable urban development

Preventing and mitigating the risks of natural disasters caused by the impacts of climate change is one of the primary objectives of the collaborative mapping effort being advanced through the non-profit organization HOT (Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team). They have selected Tulum to be the recipient of support from the Global Facility for Disaster Reduction and Recovery (GFDRR) of the World Bank, in conjunction with the NGO Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team (HoT), to carry out this project.

According to the statement, Open Cities is a global initiative that seeks to catalyze the creation, management, and use of open data to produce innovative solutions for urban planning and resilience.

Co.Mapper Tulum is the version of this initiative that has been implemented for the city of Tulum, Mexico, in line with the GFDRR’s Program for Resilient Cities.

The project, called Co.Mapper, began its work in November 2021 and concluded with a closing ceremony on April 17, 2023, at the municipality of Tulum’s council chamber.

The partners in this project were HOT (Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team) and the General Directorate of Sustainable Urban Territorial Development, through the Environmental Sustainability Directorate, who were responsible for leading the project.

The goal is to have an open data platform that enables the generation of information about the political environment, thus supporting data management and exchange. The software used in this project allows data to be converted into effective actions for decision-making on risk atlases, urban planning, and climate change mitigation, thereby promoting the resilience of the municipality of Tulum.
