Tulum airport: will have military base, connection to the Mayan Train and military base to attend disasters

Gustavo Ricardo Vallejo Suárez, general resident engineer of the General Directorate of Engineers of the Secretariat of National Defense (Sedena), informed that the “Felipe Carrillo Puerto” Tulum International Airport will have a military air base to strengthen the security and surveillance of the national air space.

In a morning press conference, Vallejo Suarez assured that this airport to be built by the Mexican Army will be “a green airport” due to its conception, construction and operation in accordance with the recommendations of the International Civil Aviation Organization and that it is part of the world initiative for environmental protection.

He pointed out that this airport is expected to receive in its first phase of development close to 5.5 million passengers per year, most of them foreigners.

“This airport complex will provide projection and tourism and economic growth for the southern zone of the Mayan Riviera. Additionally, it will have a great logistical capacity thanks to its strategic central location and its connection to the Mayan Train.

It will be a green airport due to its conception, construction and operation in accordance with the recommendations of the International Civil Aviation Organization and part of the world initiative for the protection of the environment. It will be a quality project with a high sense of innovation through the use of the most advanced technologies.

“It will have a wide range of airport services, as well as a multipurpose military base to strengthen the security and surveillance of the national airspace, assist the population in case of disasters and attend forest fires,” he said.

This is what the Tulum International Airport will look like

  • It will have two floors, the first one will be for passengers (arrivals and departures), plus a basement for services and power supply.
  • Its capacity is for five million passengers per year.
  • Air traffic control tower.
  • Fuel terminal.
  • Airport service area (with drinking water and wastewater treatment plants).
  • Fixed Base Operator (F.B.O).

At the National Palace, the military engineer explained that the airport will also have a 10.5 kilometer commercial and service corridor and will be interconnected with the Tren Maya infrastructure.
