President AMLO’s Tulum Agenda, Balancing Nature and Community

TULUM, México – President Andrés Manuel López Obrador announced his upcoming visit to the municipality of Tulum. The purpose of his visit is to address the pressing issues faced by the residents of the Rojo Gómez community, nestled within the Sian Ka’an biosphere reserve in Tulum.

During the conference, President López Obrador emphasized that the fundamental concern lies in the fact that this area is a protected reserve. He acknowledged that the community members may have settled there long ago due to necessity, but also noted the importance of preserving these natural havens. Striking a delicate balance between preserving ecological sanctuaries and addressing the needs of local inhabitants will be the focus of the president’s visit.

“Their long-standing presence in the region grants them a certain level of possession, and it is our duty to find a resolution while ensuring we prevent further encroachments into the reserves,” stated the President.

President López Obrador vowed to work closely with local authorities to find a viable solution that caters to the needs of the Rojo Gómez community while safeguarding the integrity of the natural reserves. He stressed the significance of respecting the boundaries of protected areas while empathizing with the inhabitants who have made this region their home.

In particular, the President intends to discuss the matter with the Governor, Mara Lezama Espinosa, and Tulum’s Mayor, Diego Castañon Trejo, during his visit to Tulum. The collaboration with both state and municipal authorities is crucial to achieving a balanced outcome.

Tulum’s allure as a breathtaking tourist destination has made the preservation of its natural wonders a matter of utmost importance. President López Obrador’s visit demonstrates his commitment to tackling environmental challenges and addressing the concerns of local communities.

As the world’s attention turns to Tulum, this visit represents an opportunity to find a sustainable and harmonious resolution to the complex issues surrounding ecological preservation and community livelihoods.
