Preserving natural wonders: Guardia Nacional establishes special unit to monitor ‘El Jaguar’ National Park in Tulum

A contingent of 225 National Guard officers arrived in Tulum on February 14th. Among them, a specialized unit was formed to provide continuous protection to the El Jaguar Flora and Fauna Protection Area. Their primary responsibility is to prevent land invasions.

According to Gabriel Bautista Tapia, the Inspector General of the National Guard, there is a designated force exclusively assigned to the Jaguar Park, which includes the Tulum archaeological zone and the entire protected natural reserve. This reserve was declared in July of last year and includes the Caribbean Biosphere Reserve.

The National Guard is deployed throughout the Tulum municipality. However, activities are also carried out to maintain public safety in the city of Tulum. In addition, there is an exclusively designated force for the Jaguar Park, which includes the archaeological zone and all the protected natural reserves, including the Caribbean Biosphere Reserve.

The primary task of this special group is to prevent invasions within the reserve’s lands. There is a high risk that individuals will continue to enter and invade the various properties within the park, carrying out construction activities that will ultimately harm the protected natural reserve.

“The main risk is that people will continue to invade the various properties within the park and carry out construction activities that will ultimately harm the protected natural reserve,” emphasized the Inspector General of the National Guard.
