Marciano Dzul, mayor of Tulum, is in delicate health

The mayor of Tulum, Marciano Dzul Caamal, is in delicate health, in a process that has limited his participation in the activities of the municipality he heads.

In the midst of this situation, various rumors have arisen. Even, this afternoon, versions circulated about his death in the city of Merida, which were denied by the Communication Department of the Tulum Municipality.

What happened to the Mayor of Tulum?

Regarding the illness that afflicted him, unofficial versions indicate that it was pancreatic cancer, that he had undergone chemotherapy treatments and that he had even undergone surgery in a hospital outside the state of Quintana Roo.

As for his performance as mayor, at least since last January he limited his public appearances. At that time he informed that he would not attend the International Tourism Fair in Madrid due to medical prescription, since he was in the process of recovery, without giving further details.

On February 28 the municipal president headed a double session of the town council virtually. The previous sessions had been postponed. On the same day, Senator Marybel Villegas said that Marciano Dzul is ill with cancer.

In recent public events the treasurer of the Tulum City Hall, Diego Castañón Trejo, has attended on his behalf. Regarding Marciano Dzul Caamal’s state of health, the Tulum City Hall released a brief statement tonight.

“We inform you that Municipal President Marciano Dzul Caamal is in the process of recovery. We ask you to be attentive to the official channels of information for any relevant information that the citizenship should know. We thank you for your understanding and commitment to truthful and timely information” reads the communiqué sent by the spokesperson through the WhatsApp channel.

Who is Marciano Dzul Caamal?

Marciano Dzul Caamal is 53 years old and is the current municipal president of Tulum, Quintana Roo, for the coalition “Juntos Haremos Historia Quintana Roo”, formed by the parties Morena, Partido Verde and Partido del Trabajo for the period 2021 – 2024.

With only completed elementary school, Dzul Caamal has been involved in politics since he was very young. From 2005 to 2008 he was the Commissioner of Tulum when the town still belonged to the municipality of Solidaridad and already as the ninth municipality, he was the first municipal president from 2009 to 2011.

He was also Director of the Commission for the Development of the Mayan Ethnic and Indigenous Communities of the State and councilman of the town.

Dzul Caamal also participated in the elections for municipal president of Tulum in 2018, where he lost to Víctor Mas, who was the winner in that year’s elections.
