López Obrador’s Impressive Advancements in Tren Maya and Tulum Airport

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has conducted an assessment of the progress made in the construction of Section 5 of the Tren Maya, where the Tulum International Airport is being built. Through a message on social media, the Mexican president pointed out that “by December, it will be possible to fly to any place in Mexico and the world.”

“We are carrying out the evaluation of Section 5 of the Tren Maya, where the Tulum-Felipe Carrillo Puerto Airport is being built. It is a new marvel of civil-military engineering and the exceptional work of Mexican laborers. By December, it will be possible to fly to any place in Mexico and the world,” he said.

President López Obrador issued a decree last Thursday stating that the construction, operation, and functioning of “priority projects” such as the Tren Maya, the Interoceanic Corridor of the Isthmus, and three airports, including Tulum, are matters of national security and public interest.

This decree was essentially a response to the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN), which had invalidated the Mexican president’s previous decree declaring his priority projects as a matter of “national security,” reserving information and preventing any legal obstruction to halt them.

On Thursday, in the evening edition of the Official Gazette of the Federation (DOF), López Obrador published the new decree.

“The construction, operation, maintenance, functioning, infrastructure, public interest properties, execution, and management of transportation infrastructure, services, and development hubs for the well-being of both the Tren Maya and the Interoceanic Corridor of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec are matters of national security and public interest,” stated the first part of the text.

“And the airports of Palenque, Chiapas; Chetumal, and Tulum, Quintana Roo, under the terms expressed in the considerations of this decree,” the decree added.
