Increased concentration of military personnel on Tulum’s beaches

Spotting armed guards or fully-armed military personnel is a surprising yet common sight in many Mexican Caribbean resort hotspots. This week, officials announced that the country’s National Guard will deploy troops in Tulum, one of the most visited cities in Quintana Roo, in an effort to boost safety for travelers. Authorities are currently gearing up for a record number of travelers as the Mexican Caribbean heads into the busy spring season.

Mexico’s National Guard has deployed over 50 troops to patrol some of Tulum’s main attractions, including its popular beaches and Archeological Zone. National Guard troops will also target drug traffickers and illegal street vendors who sell counterfeit products. While often not posing a threat to travelers, they can tarnish Tulum’s reputation among visitors and even land visitors in jail.
