Illegal construction closed down in Tulum National Park

Tulum, Q.R. — Personnel from the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa) placed closure seals on the fence of a hotel on Playa Santa Fe beach. The hotel is within the Tulum National Park.

Inspectors arrived at the hotel, which is located less than 800 meters from the archaeological zone of Tulum, where they detected environmental inconsistencies and lack of permits.

This site, which until a few months ago was a restaurant, was found fenced with additional construction advancements inside the perimeter.

Román Meyer Falcón, head of the Secretary of Agrarian, Territorial and Urban Development (Sedatu), visited the National Park the day before where he announced that by early 2023, the municipality intends to start a project to rearrange the beach area.

“This is today in Tulum. The teams from CONANP and PROFEPA who are stopping new construction inside the National Park, ” he posted on social media.

The site was shut down after for building on a coastal dune without prior authorization. The Ministry of the Environment and Natural Resources, the National Commission for Protected Natural Areas, the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection and the National Guard participated in the operation.

Last week, Meyer Falcón said that President Andrés Manuel López Obrador had ordered the illegal processes of construction inside the National Park stopped. He said the most common offenses include the construction of private fences.
