Access to Tulum National Park restricted due to operation

National Guard personnel surprisingly prohibited motorized vehicles from entering Tulum National Park, apparently because of an operation against a hotel in the area.

Cab drivers, tourist transportation and suppliers discovered that they could not enter the park when they arrived at the access pen, because the National Guard said that they would only allow people to enter on foot or on bicycles, due to an alleged road repair.

This excuse was false, because the only works inside the park are those carried out by the Secretary of Agrarian, Territorial and Urban Development (Sedatu) to open three accesses to the beach, which do not touch the road.

However, from the side of the Archaeological Zone, the Attorney General’s Office, the Federal Attorney General’s Office for Environmental Protection, the National Guard, and the State Police were busy fighting against a hotel in the area, which allegedly built a structure illegally.

This is the third operation by the Federal Government against constructions inside the park, which Sedatu’s head, Román Meyer, assured that they would not be tolerated.

Outside the park, tourist service providers did not hide their dissatisfaction with the situation, since they had clients who had entered a beach club and now they could not go to pick them up for their return transport.

“They hurt us, because people are piled up on the beach and we can’t go get them. These operations should be done in the early morning,” complained one carrier (Agencia SIM).
