Tulum’s beach cleanup: a collaborative effort for a better environment

In Tulum, a coordinated effort by the Federal Maritime Terrestrial Zone (Zofemat) of the local government, associations, service providers, and volunteers has commenced beach cleaning. On Friday morning, workers and volunteers gathered at Playa Santa Fe to initiate the coastal cleaning program in Tulum.

Vicente Francisco Aldape, the municipal treasurer of the Tulum local government, representing Mayor Diego Castañón, acknowledged that teamwork produces positive results. He emphasized that everyone agrees on the goal of a better Tulum, with clean, clear, and preserved beaches for the enjoyment of both tourists and Tulum families.

The director of Zofemat Tulum, Melitón González, stated that since the beginning of the administration, they have worked hard to achieve the Platinum Beach certification. They have undertaken activities such as cleaning, waste removal, sargasso management, and the installation of preventive signage, allowing visitors to enjoy the beauties offered by the Mayan Caribbean. This opinion was shared by biologist Gema Moo, who recognized the willingness of Mayor Diego Castañón’s government, society, and associations to work together to improve Tulum.

During the cleaning of Playa Santa Fe, attendees were informed about the treatment process of some waste that was found on the beach. The exercise had dual objectives, preservation of the beach and education about the handling of the waste.
