Tulum Waste Site Fire Under Control

The Mayor, Diego Castañón, announced that the combined efforts of the three levels of government have successfully achieved 100% control over the fire that originated in the Tulum landfill. The Tulum Municipal Council emphasizes that to ensure complete extinguishment of the fire, preparations are underway for the arrival of a helicopter from the Quintana Roo government, along with additional specialized equipment that will help establish a containment perimeter. Moreover, they will apply fire-retardant foam to reduce smoke and ash levels, as the objective is to resolve the situation as quickly as possible. Furthermore, the Tulum Municipal Council reports that the brigades have made a significant progress, reaching 15 to 20% containment.

Authorities estimate that it will take approximately 15 to 20 days to completely extinguish the fire. The firefighting efforts involve personnel from the Tulum Fire Department and the Tulum Civil Protection Coordination, with support from the Mexican government through the National Defense Secretariat, National Guard, and the Quintana Roo government. Due to the landfill fire, waste collection in the municipality of Tulum has been affected, and therefore, the authorities kindly request the citizens’ patience in storing their waste in containers.

Control achieved over fire in Cristal neighborhood. Regarding the forest fire in the Cristal neighborhood, which also affects the residents of the Aldea Tulum housing development, authorities inform that the Civil Protection and Forest Protection Brigade personnel have carried out firebreaks to gain control over the aforementioned blaze. Given the magnitude of the incident and the nature of the area, these types of measures are necessary for effective firefighting. The National Forestry Commission (Conafor) has joined forces with the initial team to ensure swift progress.
