Sargassum invasion in Tulum: Diego Castañón calls for urgent action

According to the outcome of the meeting “all against the sargassum,” presided over by the Government of Mexico, Tulum, will join the efforts of the three levels of government for the tasks of combating sargassum on the coasts of the Mexican Caribbean, in order to guarantee the first-level tourist offer in Quintana Roo.

The “all against sargassum” meeting, which covered the main issues and obstacles as well as the steps to combat the macroalga that is present on the main beaches of the Mexican Caribbean, was held this Wednesday in Tulum. The meeting was attended by representatives from the Federal and State Governments as well as six tourist municipalities.

Vicente Francisco Aldape Moncada, the City Council treasurer, and Melitón González Pérez, the director of Zofemat-Tulum, were present at the work tables and participated in the administration led by municipal president Diego Castaón Trejo. They discussed work plans, experiences, and solutions to the social issue affecting the industry without chimneys.

Under the mayor’s orders, the local government will step up its economic efforts to reduce the prevalence of sargassum in the second and third quarters of 2023, according to treasurer Aldape Moncada. In addition to the aforementioned, coordination between the three levels of government will be done to combine outcomes that enable clean beaches and a stronger tourism offer.

Diego Castaón Trejo, our president, has given us the order to handle this matter as quickly as possible, to step up the efforts that have been done in previous years, and most importantly, to make sure that the actions are evident and in the best interests of all citizens.

Melion González, the director of Zofemat-Tulum, admitted that this year’s sargassum season is anticipated to be complicated; as a result, work is now being done on methods and strategies for visitors and families to appreciate the unrivaled Mayan Caribbean.

We’ll have a challenging season, and our coasts will be covered in a lot of macroalgae, as is well known. In order to share solutions for the elimination of sargassum, we will be collaborating closely with Diego Castaón, the local president, he stated.

In addition to the director of the Federal Maritime Terrestrial Zone, DEM. José ngel Pérez Pérez, coordinator of the Sargassum Attention Strategy, and representatives of the municipalities of Isla Mujeres, Puerto Morelos, Solidaridad, Cozumel, Tulum, and Othón P. Blanco, Rear Admiral CC attended the meeting against sargassum.
