First Train of Tren Maya Reaches Cancun, Paving the Way for a Modern Mexico

CANCUN, Quintana Roo – In a momentous occasion, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador welcomed the first train carriage of the Tren Maya to Cancun, marking a truly historic milestone. Covering a distance of 1,943 kilometers from Ciudad Sahagún, Hidalgo, this train was joined by three more carriages en route to Quintana Roo.

The transfer involved personnel from the National Tourism Promotion Fund (Fonatur), the Secretariats of National Defense, Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation, as well as the National Guard.

President López Obrador shared this news through a video posted on his social media platforms, where he celebrated this event with the workers who are contributing to the realization of the strategic Tren Maya project.

“Congratulations! (…) Men and women, technicians, professionals, and public servants, let’s go together. We are making history. Long live the Tren Maya, long live the workers of Mexico. Viva Mexico!” he exclaimed at one of the train depots being constructed on the peninsula.

Accompanied by the governor of Quintana Roo, María Elena Lezama Espinosa, representatives from ICA and Alstom México, as well as public servants from the Fourth Transformation Government, the Chief Executive stated that the arrival of these trains is another step toward fulfilling the commitment to deliver the Tren Maya to the Mexican people by December of this year, benefiting the population of the southeast region.

“This is a first-class train,” affirmed Maite Ramos Gómez, the General Director of Alstom México. She further detailed that the train model arriving on the peninsula is of standard quality, guaranteeing accessibility, seats that meet the required standards, and, as promised, designated spaces for luggage, bicycles, and wheelchairs, along with suitable restrooms for individuals with reduced mobility.

Ramos Gómez explained that the pilot and co-pilot’s operational cabin is spacious, secure, sturdy, and protected against accidents.

“Everything is top-notch, and, most importantly, 72 percent of the components are domestically sourced, a hundred percent made in Mexico. (…) This train has a heart; here lies the heart of Mexico. As it passed by, we saw people coming out to applaud, feeling a sense of ownership. Truly, this is the first train with a heart,” she emphasized.

Joining President López Obrador were Javier May Rodríguez, the Director-General of Fonatur; Luis Cresencio Sandoval González, the Secretary of National Defense; Gustavo Vallejo, the General Commander of the Engineering Unit and responsible for Sections 5, 6, and 7 of the Tren Maya and the Tulum Airport; Diego Prieto Hernández, the General Director of the National Institute of Anthropology and History; Juan Pablo De Botton Falcón, the Undersecretary of Expenditure at the Ministry of Finance and Public Credit; Daniel Chávez Morán, the honorary supervisor of the Tren Maya construction; Guadalupe Phillips Margain, the General Director of ICA, and other public servants.
