New Horizons for Tulum Tourism in 2024

TULUM, Mexico—As Tulum braces for another year of burgeoning growth in its hotel offerings, the Tulum Hotel Association (THA) projects a modest 1.5% increase in room numbers, aiming to sustain its allure for domestic and international travelers. This expansion will propel Tulum past the 12,000-room threshold, with 70% of these accommodations fully licensed and compliant with all required permits.

Despite the hotel infrastructure’s expansion, the THA forecasts a steady climb in room occupancy throughout 2024, estimating an increase of between 5% and 8%. This projection follows a notable uptrend: Tulum closed 2022 at an 81% annual occupancy rate, which escalated to an average of 84% in 2023. Such a consistent rise underscores Tulum’s enduring appeal and status as one of Mexico’s most frequented destinations.

The consistent increase in formal room numbers over recent years has been significant. Between 2022 and 2023 alone, 1,500 rooms were introduced, primarily within the hotel sector. This expansion has been instrumental in sustaining the steady growth in occupancy rates, which remain between 5% and 8%.

This growth trajectory is part of a broader trend observed in Tulum over the past decade, reflecting the town’s evolution from a quiet beach destination to a bustling tourism hotspot. The THA’s efforts to ensure a sustainable development model, focusing on eco-friendly practices and preserving Tulum’s unique cultural and natural heritage, have played a crucial role in this transformation. This approach has not only attracted a diverse array of visitors but has also set Tulum apart as a model for sustainable tourism in the region.

The increased accommodation capacity is expected to meet the rising demand fueled by Tulum’s growing popularity among diverse tourist demographics, ranging from luxury seekers to eco-conscious travelers. This expansion is also anticipated to bolster the local economy by generating employment opportunities and fostering a supportive ecosystem for small and medium-sized enterprises within the tourism sector.

Moreover, the THA has announced several initiatives to enhance the overall visitor experience in Tulum. These include improvements in infrastructure, such as upgrading local roads and enhanced waste management systems, and the introduction of new cultural and recreational activities that celebrate the area’s rich Mayan heritage and natural beauty. These efforts align with the association’s vision of ensuring that tourism growth is accompanied by environmental stewardship and community welfare.

In light of these developments, Tulum stands on the brink of a new chapter in its journey as a premier travel destination. With a strategic focus on sustainable growth, enhanced visitor experiences, and a commitment to preserving its unique charm, Tulum is poised to continue captivating the hearts of travelers from around the globe.
