TULUM, Mexico – “Extortion is an underestimated social problem,” declared David Ortiz Mena, Vice President of the Mexican Caribbean Hotel Association, following a Security Board meeting and another with local authorities where commitments were made to combat this scourge by promoting anonymous reporting.
The hotel leader, in conversation, noted that many tourists might fall victim to police abuses in this tourist destination. Still, it often goes unpunished due to victims’ lack of knowledge or reluctance to report it. “In terms of security, there are undoubtedly areas for improvement; the meetings were collaborative, seeking joint solutions rather than assigning blame,” he stated as the Tulum Hotels Association President. “We will address the issue of extortions.” It’s understandable, he added, that many visitors might not want to approach authorities to report, but promoting other avenues, such as anonymous complaints or grievances to the police themselves, could be encouraged.
Other issues discussed include informal trade on the beaches, which causes disorder and potential risks to tourists. “As hoteliers, we must contribute more by expanding surveillance with more cameras connected to the C4 and C5,” he detailed.
Finally, road safety was discussed following recent fatal accidents in the area. To reduce their frequency, a registry of these incidents will be initiated. “There’s a lack of investment and signage. Federal Highway 307 requires maintenance. Though there’s a State Road Police, it’s still understaffed,” he added.
He emphasized that in all these aspects of security, “instead of pointing fingers at authorities, we all must act and not remain passive.”
