Tulum and Chetumal to Join the Maya Train in June

TULUM, México – In a landmark announcement during President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s morning press conference, Óscar David Lozano Águila, General Director of the Maya Train project, revealed the forthcoming inauguration of the train’s segments connecting Playa del Carmen to Tulum, Chetumal, and Escárcega, scheduled for June. This strategic timeline aligns with the conclusion of the electoral ban period, ensuring the event’s compliance with national electoral regulations.

The Maya Train, a cornerstone of Mexico’s infrastructure development, aims to bolster connectivity across the Yucatán Peninsula, enhancing both passenger and freight transport. Lozano Águila underscored the project’s dual focus, highlighting its significance beyond passenger service to include a robust freight system intended to link the Isthmus of Tehuantepec’s interoceanic corridor with the Maya Train, thereby facilitating a seamless flow of goods across regions.

As part of this extensive network, the anticipated inauguration in June will mark a significant milestone in the project’s progress, with the completion of 1,554 kilometers of track paving the way for enhanced regional development and connectivity. The sections stretching from Playa del Carmen to Tulum, and onward to Chetumal, Xpujil, and Escárcega, are expected to gradually integrate into the existing infrastructure, heralding a new era of transportation and economic opportunity for the region.

Furthermore, the establishment of specialized facilities for freight, including a multimodal freight exchange terminal in Palenque and an operations yard in Escárcega, exemplifies the project’s comprehensive approach to transportation infrastructure. This initiative not only promises to revolutionize passenger travel across the peninsula but also positions the Maya Train as a pivotal element in Mexico’s logistical and economic landscape, drawing interest from companies eager to leverage this new conduit for the movement of raw materials and goods.
