A Feast of 25 Restaurants Beckons in 2024

TULUM, Mexico – A culinary wave is set to sweep through the vibrant tourist destinations of Cancun and Tulum in 2024, with the confirmation from the National Chamber of the Restaurant and Seasoned Food Industry (Canirac) Quintana Roo that 25 restaurants, spanning from grand establishments to cozy gems, are poised to open their doors.

The spotlight of this gastronomic expansion will particularly shine on Cancun, buoyed by the recent unveiling of two shopping hubs. One, a revamped La Isla plaza nestled in the hotel zone, anticipates hosting 10 diverse restaurants. The other, Go Grand Outlet Riviera Maya, positioned along the federal highway Cancun-Puerto Morelos, is gearing up to welcome eight new culinary ventures of varying sizes, as shared by Julio Villareal Zapata, the president of Canirac Quintana Roo.

These dining ventures are fueled by substantial investments from national entrepreneurs, with ambitious projects allocating up to 20 million pesos for each establishment. Villareal Zapata highlighted that the 2023 legal victories, secured through protective measures, have temporarily suspended the Regulations of the General Tobacco Law. This regulation previously restricted smoking to designated areas within restaurants, but with the suspension endorsed by the Supreme Court of Justice (SCJN), establishments have the opportunity in 2024 to adhere to the 2022 law, allowing designated smoking spaces within restaurants. This interim period enables federal authorities to refine the legislation, incorporating feedback from the national restaurant sector.

Looking ahead, the president of Canirac expressed a commitment to promoting local gastronomy in collaboration with municipal and state governments. The aim is to stimulate consumption among both tourists and residents.

“As we navigate this year, we aspire to encourage people to venture out, indulge a bit more, and include entertainment, visits to shopping centers, and dining experiences in their budgets,” stated the leader of the business chamber.

This culinary renaissance promises not only an influx of diverse dining options but also reflects the resilience and adaptability of the restaurant industry in the face of evolving regulations, contributing to the vibrant tapestry of Tulum and Cancun.
