Rocío Peralta Galicia, head of the Department of Natural Resources of the Directorate of Environmental Sustainability (DSA) of Tulum, explained that this initiative aims to highlight the importance of trees as symbols of life and connection with nature.
The program, which will be open until May 30, invites citizens to observe urban trees and select those they consider most representative. Proposals should briefly explain the tree choice, detailing its importance and symbolism for the community. Additionally, the tree must be measured and photographed, and its location recorded. Peralta Galicia emphasized the importance of accompanying the proposal with stories or anecdotes about the chosen tree. “We ask people to share any stories they know about the tree, measure its diameter, and tell us if they know the species. If not, send us the photos, and we will record it,” said the official. This initiative is part of the broader program “Adopt a Tree,” which takes place every Monday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. This program allows anyone to adopt one of the available trees and commit to caring for it. “We provide an adoption certificate for the tree, and several hotels have adopted trees with their staff. People can plant the tree at the hotel or take it home and plant it in a designated location,” added Peralta Galicia. This practical approach promotes urban reforestation and engages the community in protecting and caring for their natural environment.
