Which Tree Represents Tulum? You Can Decide

The Tulum City Council invites the community to propose emblematic trees representing the municipality’s identity, fostering participation and environmental conservation.

TULUM, Mexico – To strengthen the ecological and cultural identity of the municipality, the Tulum City Council has launched an open call for the community to propose emblematic trees that represent the essence and history of this region. Rocío Peralta Galicia, head of the Department of Natural Resources of the Directorate of Environmental Sustainability (DSA) of Tulum, explained that this initiative aims to highlight the importance of trees as symbols of life and connection with nature.

The program, which will be open until May 30, invites citizens to observe urban trees and select those they consider most representative. Proposals should briefly explain the tree choice, detailing its importance and symbolism for the community. Additionally, the tree must be measured and photographed, and its location recorded. All this information should be sent to [email protected] or the Facebook page @DireccionDeOrdenamientoAmbientalYCambioClimatico.

Peralta Galicia emphasized the importance of accompanying the proposal with stories or anecdotes about the chosen tree. “We ask people to share any stories they know about the tree, measure its diameter, and tell us if they know the species. If not, send us the photos, and we will record it,” said the official. This project aims to showcase Tulum’s natural beauty and foster a sense of belonging and environmental stewardship among its residents.

This initiative is part of the broader program “Adopt a Tree,” which takes place every Monday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. This program allows anyone to adopt one of the available trees and commit to caring for it. “We provide an adoption certificate for the tree, and several hotels have adopted trees with their staff. People can plant the tree at the hotel or take it home and plant it in a designated location,” added Peralta Galicia. This practical approach promotes urban reforestation and engages the community in protecting and caring for their natural environment.

Tulum’s residents and visitors have positively received the “Adopt a Tree” program. Various hotels have actively participated, involving their staff in tree planting and care. This collaboration between the private sector and the community exemplifies a shared commitment to a greener and more sustainable future.

In addition to tree planting initiatives, the Tulum City Council has been implementing various strategies to promote sustainability and environmental care. The Directorate of Environmental Sustainability has been working on biodiversity conservation projects, environmental education, and waste management, aiming to make Tulum a model of sustainable development.
