U.S. vessel runs aground near the Sian Ka’an Biosphere

The Secretariat of the Navy (Semar) informed that a boat from the United States ran aground on Monday in a coral formation in the vicinity of Cayo Culebra, on an uninhabited island in the middle of the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve.

In a press release, the Semar added that there were two crew members on the boat, who were rescued by Navy personnel.

To achieve the rescue, it was necessary the intervention of two boats and a Navy aircraft, to search for the boat from Florida, United States.

The two foreigners who were on the boat, were taken to the Advanced Naval Station in Puerto Aventuras, from where they left by their own means, without having suffered any injuries.

So far, the possible damage to the coral reef is unknown, and there is no information as to how the stranded vessel will be removed and if the crew members will be sanctioned.
