Tulum’s 55-Million Peso Investment in Water Desalination

TULUM, Mexico – With an investment exceeding 55 million pesos, Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa has unveiled a groundbreaking water desalination plant in Tulum. This state-of-the-art facility boasts the capacity to provide 50 liters per second of potable water, addressing the escalating demand fueled by the municipality’s rapid growth.

“For decades, ensuring the supply of potable water was pushed aside, shrouded in simulation, and manipulated to deepen the cracks of corruption. Consequently, it has been overwhelmed by peak-day demand, resulting in inefficiency and the need for water rationing,” articulated the Governor.

Operated by the Water and Sewerage Commission (CAPA), the new plant features three treatment trains, each capable of processing 17.5 liters per second of permeated water. This amalgamated capacity achieves a daily average treatment rate of 50 liters per second, significantly benefitting 30,945 residents.

The construction of this desalination plant, utilizing a two-stage reverse osmosis process on brackish water, bolsters the city’s potable water system, augmenting water production capacity with the added boon of heightened water quality. Governor Mara Lezama emphasized that these innovative solutions mark a stride forward into a future where water apprehension is supplanted by assured supply.

Moreover, it embodies progress towards a profound transformation, demonstrating the commitment of the humanistic and progressive government to the populace’s needs, as outlined in the New Accord for the Welfare and Development of Quintana Roo.

“Today, we don’t just celebrate the inauguration of a water desalination plant; we herald the dawn of a new chapter in Tulum’s history,” proclaimed the first female Governor of Quintana Roo. She underscored that battling corruption extends the reach of public funds, facilitating a more significant impact.

The elucidation of the plant’s functionality and operation was conducted by Armando Alberto Covarrubias Cortés, the Director-General of CAPA. He was joined by Erika Ramírez Méndez, the local director of CONAGUA, as well as Mayor Diego Castañón Trejo and members of the Citizen Participation Committee.
