TULUM, Quintana Roo – In June, the 12 archaeological sites open to visitors in Quintana Roo welcomed a staggering 113,242 individuals. Out of this total, an impressive 72.59%, equivalent to 77,224 explorers, chose Tulum as their destination. Undoubtedly, Tulum has established itself as the frontrunner in the state, followed closely by Chacchoben and San Gervasio in Cozumel, according to the Institutional System of Visitor Statistics.
Among the visitors, a significant portion consisted of both domestic and international tourists. In fact, in the past month alone, out of all the sites preserving archaeological remnants in the region, 33.68% (38,140 individuals) were domestic visitors, while 66.32% (75,102 individuals) were foreign tourists.
The report further reveals that Tulum, with a remarkable count of 77,224 visitors, secured its position as the most visited place in Quintana Roo. Chacchoben received 13,076 visitors, closely followed by San Gervasio with 8,886. Kohunlich attracted 2,058 visitors, whereas El Meco hosted 1,409. Additionally, Muyil recorded 1,388 visitors, while El Rey welcomed 1,005. Oxtankah and Dzinbanché-Kinichná received 627 and 484 visitors, respectively. Xel-há witnessed a footfall of 219 tourists, and Xcaret’s archaeological zone had 6 visitors. However, no visitors were registered at Cobá during the month of June.
So far this year, the total number of visitors to these historical sites amounts to 1,039,133. Remarkably, Tulum has captured an impressive 76.92% of these visitors, with 765,510 tourists registered in the National Institute of Anthropology and History’s (INAH) system.
Within this segment of cultural tourism enthusiasts, 65.06% (676,020 individuals) are of foreign origin, while 34.94% (363,113 individuals) are domestic visitors. Notably, out of all the visitors who arrived this year, 95.77% chose to explore the archaeological zones, while 4.23% preferred to visit museums within the region.
It is worth mentioning that, as of the first half of this year, Tulum is on track to surpass last year’s record, when it welcomed a staggering 1,405,140 individuals in the state, out of a total of 1,895,754 visitors to all archaeological sites in Quintana Roo. Just a few days ago, it was announced that the Tulum Archaeological Zone will undergo a meticulous assessment of the state of conservation of its mural paintings, stuccos, and various decorative elements as part of the Archaeological Zones Improvement Program (Promeza).
