TULUM, Mexico – The forthcoming inauguration of the new Felipe Carrillo Puerto International Airport stands as a monumental achievement that will leave a lasting imprint on President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s legacy, according to Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa. As she toured the facilities set to open on December 1, the governor commended the dedication and hard work of the laborers who contributed to the realization of this significant project.
Governor Lezama highlighted that in accordance with the standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization, the Tulum airport is poised to become Mexico’s first “green airport.” This distinction arises from its commitment to protecting and preserving local flora and fauna, along with robust measures to mitigate environmental impact.
Emphasizing the potential of this airport, Mara Lezama underscored its role in reinforcing Quintana Roo’s tourism leadership. She anticipates a positive ripple effect on employment, tourism, and the overall well-being of residents in the central and southern regions of the state, thereby strengthening the New Agreement for Well-being and Development.
Quintana Roo, as asserted by the governor, is poised to become the first state in the country with four international airports—Cancún, Cozumel, Chetumal, and now Tulum. This network aims to connect the region with thousands of tourists eager to explore the natural wonders and experience the hospitality of the Quintanaroenses.
“The transformation is progressing by leaps and bounds. In the southeastern region, we witness significant projects and municipalities interlinked through the Maya Train, the train of social justice,” remarked Governor Lezama. She highlighted that this endeavor generated nearly 15,000 jobs and is poised to welcome approximately 5.5 million passengers annually once inaugurated by President López Obrador in the coming days.
The Felipe Carrillo Puerto Airport boasts an expansive construction spanning over 75,000 square meters and features a 3.7-kilometer-long runway, capable of accommodating state-of-the-art aircraft technology for seamless landings. As Quintana Roo embraces this groundbreaking development, the inauguration of the Tulum airport marks not just a milestone in infrastructure but a testament to the region’s commitment to sustainable progress and connectivity.
