Ready, Set, Fly! Tulum’s New Airport Flights Available Now

TULUM, Mexico – The much-anticipated Tulum International Airport is gearing up to open its doors, and travelers are buzzing with excitement. While the airport’s official website mentions an April 2024 opening, Aeromexico and VivaAerobus are wasting no time, offering nonstop flights from Mexico City to Tulum starting December 1. Yes, you read that right – this airport project might just beat its own schedule.

Back in June, Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador shared a sneak peek of the airport’s progress on social media. At that time, significant strides had been made on the runway, although terminal infrastructure was still in its nascent stages.

The progress, though, is substantial enough that both Aeromexico and VivaAerobus are already selling tickets. Aeromexico is set to operate the inaugural flight, scheduled to touch down at Tulum Airport at 11:50 a.m. on December 1. Shortly thereafter, a VivaAerobus flight will land at 4:10 p.m., marking the commencement of Tulum’s aviation era.

For those hoping for direct U.S. airline routes to Tulum, patience is key for now. The airport will initially cater to domestic flights within Mexico, but it’s only a matter of time before American, Delta, and United seize the opportunity to whisk passengers to this alluring destination on the Yucatan Peninsula.

However, if you can’t wait, Delta’s partner, Aeromexico, has got you covered this winter with fares starting at just $291 roundtrip. Moreover, the recent return of Mexico to the Federal Aviation Administration’s highest Level 1 aviation safety rating means that more services and routes to the United States are on the horizon.

The dream of a Tulum Airport has been on the radar for years, and now it’s finally taking shape. This new facility is tailor-made for tourists seeking to explore the captivating region south of Cancún.

Situated 40 miles south of Playa del Carmen and 75 miles south of Cancún, Tulum boasts pristine beachfront hotels, awe-inspiring archaeological ruins, and the natural wonder of Parque Nacional Tulum. Once operational, Tulum Airport will become the region’s third major gateway, alongside Cancún (CUN) and Cozumel (CZM).

Google Maps estimates a drive time of 1 hour and 36 minutes from CUN to Tulum, making flights to TQO an attractive option for travelers who prefer not to embark on a lengthy road trip after their international journey. While Cancún is renowned for its fierce airline competition and affordable fares, Cozumel also occasionally offers budget-friendly flight deals.

The advent of Tulum’s airport is poised to transform the travel landscape in the region. Not only will it provide a direct gateway to this sought-after destination for North American travelers, but it may also spark increased competition in flight prices across the Yucatan Peninsula.
