TULUM, México – WestJet, the leading Canadian airline, has announced a significant expansion of its flight services to Tulum’s newly inaugurated Felipe Carrillo Puerto International Airport. From November 2024 to April 2025, WestJet will operate new routes from Calgary and Toronto, reinforcing Tulum’s connectivity with Canada and solidifying its position as a premier Caribbean destination.
Starting November 9, 2024, WestJet will launch a weekly flight from Calgary and three weekly flights from Toronto to Tulum. These routes are part of a broader strategy by WestJet to enhance its presence in sun destinations and meet the increasing demand for travel to Mexico’s Riviera Maya. The airline’s commitment to Tulum is evident as it seeks to cater to high-end travelers from Calgary and Toronto, known for their affluent residents who frequently seek warm escapes during winter.
Jorge Molina Pérez, Tulum’s Director of Tourism and Economic Development, expressed enthusiasm about this development, highlighting how it will further elevate Tulum’s status as a top destination for international travelers. “Tulum continues to shine as a Caribbean gem that not only offers sun and beaches but also showcases rich Mayan culture,” Pérez remarked. This strategic move is expected to attract more visitors from Canada, the United States, Europe, and the Middle East, bolstering the local economy and tourism sector.
WestJet’s expansion is part of a larger trend among airlines to increase their services to Tulum. Alongside WestJet, major carriers such as American Airlines, Delta, JetBlue, and Air Canada have also announced direct flights to Tulum, underscoring the region’s growing appeal. American Airlines will offer daily flights from Charlotte, Dallas-Fort Worth, and Miami starting in March 2024. JetBlue will commence daily services from New York’s JFK Airport in June 2024, while Air Canada will introduce twice-weekly flights from Toronto and Montreal beginning in May 2024.
This influx of new routes is a testament to Tulum’s rising prominence as a travel destination. The city’s combination of picturesque beaches, vibrant nightlife, and cultural heritage makes it an irresistible choice for travelers seeking relaxation and adventure. The opening of the new international airport further facilitates access, promising to increase tourist arrivals and economic activity in the region.
For WestJet, this expansion enhances its leisure travel portfolio and aligns with its broader goal of establishing itself as Canada’s leading leisure airline. John Weatherill, WestJet’s Executive Vice-President and Chief Commercial Officer, emphasized the importance of this move, stating, “Our expanded service to Tulum demonstrates our commitment to offering Canadians more choices and convenient travel options to sought-after destinations.”
As Tulum gears up to welcome an influx of Canadian visitors, local businesses and the hospitality sector prepare to cater to this new wave of tourists. From luxury resorts to cultural tours, Tulum is ready to offer an unforgettable experience that highlights its unique blend of natural beauty and historical significance.
