TULUM, Mexico – The enchanting allure of the Mexican Caribbean, particularly Tulum, is poised for an unprecedented surge in popularity. Recent developments, including the impending completion of the Mayan Train and Tulum International Airport, are set to transform Tulum into an even more sought-after destination for American tourists.
American Airlines has recently made a significant entry into this evolving landscape, solidifying its commitment to Tulum. Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa, in an exciting announcement on Friday, revealed that American Airlines has officially confirmed daily flights to Tulum. Commencing on March 28, 2024, the airline will offer a robust schedule, including four daily flights. Travelers can anticipate two daily flights from Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW), one daily service from Charlotte (CLT), and an additional daily flight from Miami (MIA). This move positions American Airlines as the primary U.S. carrier operating at Tulum International Airport, greatly enhancing accessibility for domestic and international travelers alike.
“The Felipe Carrillo Puerto International Airport of Tulum will be inaugurated in less than a month. Construction continues to advance, which will have the capacity to serve 5.5 million passengers,” Governor Espinosa declared.
Projected to conclude by December 2023, the construction of Tulum Airport aligns with the timeline for the Mayan Train’s scheduled inauguration in May 2024. This synchronized commencement of two major projects is no mere coincidence. Tulum Airport is strategically designed to seamlessly integrate with the existing highway system and sections 5-7 of the Mayan Train network. Moreover, it will house its own station, further enhancing connectivity and accessibility for travelers.
In addition to American Airlines, other major carriers such as Aeroméxico, Delta, Spirit Airlines, Viva Aerobus, and Volaris have expressed their intention to operate daily flight services to Tulum Airport.
However, for now, direct flights into Tulum remain a future prospect, as Tulum International Airport (TQO) is slated to open next month. Until then, visitors are advised to fly into Cancun International Airport and then proceed to Tulum, eagerly anticipating the seamless connectivity that Tulum Airport promises to bring to this burgeoning travel hotspot.
