TULUM, México – With the ongoing promotional campaigns and the establishment of the Tulum International Airport, local tourism officials are setting an ambitious target for 2024: surpassing the two-million-visitor mark. Mario Cruz Rodríguez, president of the Tulum Tourism Promotion Council, expressed confidence in achieving this goal, despite acknowledging the challenges faced in 2023.
The year 2023, although complex, concluded positively for Quintana Roo, with official data indicating over 20 million tourists, including approximately 1.8 million in Tulum alone, both domestic and international. This surge in tourism has been attributed to various factors, with the area’s rich cultural heritage and stunning natural landscapes being key attractions.
The newly established Tulum International Airport is expected to play a crucial role in achieving the 2024 target. Its presence not only bolsters accessibility but also signifies Tulum’s growing prominence as a global travel destination. The airport’s impact is predicted to be substantial, further enhancing Tulum’s attractiveness to both national and international visitors.
Rodríguez emphasized the importance of a collaborative approach, involving the local community, government, and business leaders, to ensure the continued growth and sustainability of Tulum’s tourism sector. This cooperative effort is seen as essential for meeting the ambitious goals set for the coming year.
A crucial aspect of this growth is the overnight stay of tourists. These visitors not only contribute significantly to the local economy through lodging expenses but also engage in various tourist activities, thereby enriching the overall economic impact. The National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) also reported a remarkable influx of over two million visitors in 2023 at the Tulum archaeological zone, underscoring the region’s cultural appeal.
Rodríguez also highlighted the role of promotional efforts at both national and local levels, with the support of the Quintana Roo government. These initiatives are designed to not only increase visitor numbers but also enhance the overall tourist experience in Tulum, ensuring that it remains a top choice for travelers seeking both cultural richness and natural beauty.
