TULUM, México —Hurricane Beryl, which has reached a formidable Category 5, has slightly altered its course and is now projected to impact the municipalities of Tulum and Felipe Carrillo Puerto. Quintana Roo Governor Mara Lezama announced that this powerful storm is expected to make landfall between the night of Thursday, July 4, and the early hours of Friday, July 5, potentially downgrading to a Category 1 or 2 on the Saffir-Simpson scale.

Governor Lezama emphasized the unpredictability of hurricanes, noting that Beryl could change direction at any moment. She urged the public to stay informed through official government channels at the state, municipal, and federal levels. “These phenomena are capricious,” Lezama said, stressing the importance of keeping up with the latest updates to stay prepared.

Preparations and Preventive Measures

With heavy rains expected to accumulate between 250 and 300 millimeters, classes have been suspended throughout the state on July 4 and 5. This preparation period is crucial to minimizing risks and ensuring the population’s safety.

These include setting up shelters, cleaning drainage systems, and trimming trees. Local authorities are working diligently to brace for Beryl’s impact.

Tourism Sector on High Alert

The tourism sector, vital to Quintana Roo’s economy, is also taking precautions. Hotels, resorts, and tour operators have activated their emergency plans, securing facilities and preparing staff for any eventuality. The priority is to ensure the safety of tourists and residents while minimizing disruptions to tourism operations.

The Cancun International Airport and other regional airports are alert and ready for possible flight cancellations or diversions. Airport authorities advise travelers to check their flight status and stay in contact with their airlines.

Recommendations for the Public

Governor Lezama reminded the public of the importance of having a family emergency plan. “It’s essential for every household to be prepared with basic supplies such as potable water, non-perishable food, medications, and batteries,” she noted. She also recommended securing properties, reinforcing windows and doors, and keeping important documents handy.

The hurricane’s trajectory and intensity are subject to change, making it crucial for the community to stay vigilant and follow official instructions.
