TULUM, México – In recent days, the small hotels in downtown Tulum have been grappling with the adverse effects of continuous power outages, leading to a premature departure of guests who find the unreliable electricity service unbearable. Santiago Puc, a receptionist at Hotel Ada, expressed to La Jornada Maya that smaller lodging establishments, particularly those with fewer than 20 rooms, have borne the brunt of this crisis, facing significant room vacancies during the recent spate of blackouts.

Puc highlighted that tourists flock to Tulum expecting a stay that meets all primary and ideal conditions. However, the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) fails to provide a quality service, impacting what hotels can offer their guests. The economic repercussions are substantial, with tourists leaving prematurely and food supplies spoiling due to lack of refrigeration.

Adding to the issue, Adrián Rodríguez of Hotel Maya noted that the power supply failures exacerbate the already declining room occupancy rates during the low season. “The tourism sector is facing a concerning situation due to frequent power interruptions. The consequences are direct and severe for hoteliers,” he stated.

Antonio Paparela, who oversees operations at Hotel Kukulcán, echoed these sentiments, criticizing the CFE for failing to meet the region’s tourism sector needs with a reliable service. The ongoing power outages have placed the CFE’s competence under scrutiny.

As the interviewees mentioned, the financial losses vary depending on the business and its rates, yet they consistently deliver a heavy blow to the hotel industry and the broader business community.

As reported earlier by The Tulum Times, Tulum has been enduring a wave of power outages triggered by ongoing rains, a problem that remains unresolved.

The persistent power outages in Tulum are not just a nuisance but a significant threat to the local economy, particularly the tourism industry. The CFE’s inability to maintain a steady electricity supply leads to financial losses and tarnishes Tulum’s reputation as a prime tourist destination. These outages are disastrous for small hotels, which rely heavily on a consistent flow of guests. Guests leave early and are dissatisfied with their stay, which directly impacts these establishments’ revenue and operational stability.

The more significant issue here is the impact on Tulum’s tourism-dependent economy. Tourism is the lifeblood of Tulum, providing jobs and supporting numerous ancillary businesses. The frequent power outages inconvenience tourists and deter future visitors, who might opt for destinations with more reliable infrastructure.

Hotel operators are calling for urgent action from the CFE and local authorities to address the power supply issues. They argue that investments in infrastructure and better management of the power grid are essential to prevent further economic damage and restore confidence in Tulum as a reliable tourist destination.

Moreover, the power outages have broader implications for Tulum’s sustainability and development goals. Reliable electricity is crucial for businesses to function efficiently, and its absence hinders growth and innovation. These outages are a significant setback for a place like Tulum, which markets itself as a blend of natural beauty and modern comfort.

The call to action is clear: the CFE and local authorities must prioritize resolving these power issues to protect Tulum’s tourism industry and, by extension, its economy. Ensuring a stable power supply is not just about keeping the lights on; it’s about sustaining livelihoods, preserving Tulum’s reputation, and securing its future as a world-class tourist destination.
