TULUM, México – As the hurricane season commences on June 1st in the Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea, and Gulf of Mexico, the Tulum Municipality has issued a reminder about the importance of the Early Warning System. The Special Operational Committee for Hydrometeorological Phenomena will convene and issue alerts when a cyclonic system with winds of at least 63 kilometers per hour is detected. Understanding these alerts is crucial for safety and preparedness.

Understanding the Alerts:

  1. Blue Alert (Minimum Danger): This is declared when a weather phenomenon is at least 71 hours away. Residents should stay informed but remain calm.
  2. Green Alert (Low Danger): Issued when a tropical cyclone is 72 to 48 hours from impact. It’s a signal to begin preliminary preparations.
  3. Yellow Alert (Moderate Danger): This alert is triggered when a hydrometeorological phenomenon is between 48 and 36 hours away. At this stage, it is recommended that you identify the nearest shelters.
  4. Orange Alert (High Danger): Declared when the impact of a tropical cyclone is expected within 36 to 12 hours. Evacuations in high-risk areas should begin.
  5. Red Alert (Approaching Danger): This is the final alert, issued when the system is 18 hours or less from impact. Residents should take shelter and avoid doors and windows.

Preparation Tips and Safety Measures:

  • Stay Informed: Monitor updates from the Civil Protection and Fire Department regularly. Reliable information sources include local news channels, official social media accounts, and government websites.
  • Emergency Kit: Ensure you have an emergency kit ready. It should include water, non-perishable food, first aid supplies, medications, important documents, flashlights, batteries, and cash.
  • Secure Property: Secure outdoor objects that could become projectiles in high winds. Reinforce windows and doors, and ensure your property is protected.
  • Evacuation Plan: Know the evacuation routes and the locations of local shelters. Have a plan for where you will go and how you will get there.
  • Family Communication Plan: Ensure all family members know how to contact each other. Have a designated meeting place and a backup plan in case of separation.

Historical Context and Expert Opinions:

Hurricanes pose a significant threat to the Yucatán Peninsula, with historical storms like Hurricane Gilbert in 1988 and Hurricane Dean in 2007 highlighting the region’s vulnerability. Experts emphasize that proactive measures and public awareness are crucial to minimizing damage and loss of life.

Dr. Ana Martínez, a meteorologist at the National Hurricane Center, explains, “The advancements in technology and communication have significantly improved our ability to predict and respond to hurricanes. However, community readiness and individual preparedness remain vital.”
