Following the impact of Tropical Storm Nadine, the XXII Tulum Sea Turtle Festival, initially scheduled for last weekend, has been rescheduled to October 25, 26, and 27. Itzel Trujano, President of the State Committee for the Protection, Conservation, and Management of the species, shared this update. The new dates allow the festival to proceed, continuing a tradition dedicated to conserving one of the region’s most iconic species.
A Blend of Nature and Culture
The festival starts on Friday, October 25, in Akumal, with activities beginning at 3:00 PM with a Mayan ceremony on the beach. This ritual pays homage to nature, seeking protection for the sea turtles. A colorful parade will follow at 3:30 PM, leading into a lively community fair (kermés) at 4:00 PM at the local sports dome. The fair will feature a variety of booths, games, workshops, music, and dance, creating a fun-filled atmosphere for locals and visitors to enjoy while supporting the cause of sea turtle conservation.
Activities in Tulum and Beyond
On Saturday, the festival moves to Tulum, with a community fair scheduled from 4:00 to 8:00 PM at the Casa de la Cultura, the town’s cultural hub. A turtle-themed caravan will set off from the intersection of Satélite and Tulum avenues, spreading awareness about the importance of protecting sea turtles. Later in the evening, from 7:30 to 8:30 PM, a photography contest will be displayed, followed by an award ceremony and the announcement of the “Tortuguero of the Year,” recognizing individuals who have significantly contributed to preserving the species.

Celebrations at the Sea Turtle Sanctuary
Sunday, October 27, brings the festival to its final venue, the Sea Turtle Sanctuary at Xcacel-Xcacelito. The day’s events start at 2:30 PM with guest registration. At 3:00 PM, a sand sculpture contest and Turtle Cinema will be held, offering a blend of creativity and education. The day’s festivities include a community fair and an awards ceremony for the best sculptures and drawings. The day’s highlight will be the symbolic release of sea turtles at sunset, closing the festival with a decisive moment of environmental awareness and action.

A Call to Action
“We invite everyone to participate and enjoy this important event celebrating the conservation of the sea turtle,” said Itzel Trujano. The festival is an opportunity to educate the community about protecting sea turtles and celebrate the collective effort that has made their conservation possible.
