TULUM, México —The Ayuntamiento of Tulum has officially established the Specialized Operational Committee for Hydrometeorological Phenomena for the 2024 season. This initiative, involving the three levels of government, aims to closely monitor and respond promptly to any natural phenomena that could threaten the municipality.

The installation ceremony was presided over by the Municipal President, Diego Castañón Trejo, alongside representatives from various government levels and the private sector. President Castañón emphasized the importance of preparedness, stating that although a season of rains and cyclones is anticipated to be relatively uneventful, the municipality must be ready to protect residents and tourists during a natural disaster.

During the session, it was revealed that the likelihood of hydrometeorological events is high this season. Therefore, the strategy reinforces preventive and coordinated efforts to ensure swift citizen assistance throughout the hurricane season. Preventive actions include tree pruning, drainage cleaning, identification of cyclone shelters, and the implementation of the storm operation protocol.

President Castañón highlighted the administration’s commitment to working closely with the State Government and the Federation within the framework of this Specialized Operational Committee. This event also saw the appointment of members to the Municipal Council and the Specialized Operational Committee, comprising municipal officials and representatives from various agencies.

Establishing the Specialized Operational Committee underscores Tulum’s commitment to proactive disaster management. By involving the three tiers of government and the private sector, the committee ensures a comprehensive approach to disaster preparedness and response. This collaboration is critical in a region prone to hurricanes and heavy rains, where rapid and coordinated actions can save lives and minimize damage.

One of the committee’s primary objectives is to enhance communication and coordination between government agencies and the community. This involves regular meetings, drills, and information dissemination to keep all stakeholders informed and prepared. The committee also focuses on leveraging technology for real-time monitoring and response, ensuring that Tulum can react swiftly to emerging threats.

Several key preventive measures have been implemented to mitigate the impact of potential hydrometeorological phenomena. These include:

  1. Tree Pruning: Regular pruning of trees to prevent branches from causing damage during high winds.
  2. Drainage Cleaning: Ensuring that all drainage systems are straightforward to prevent flooding.
  3. Cyclone Shelter Identification: Designating and preparing shelters that can accommodate residents in a cyclone.
  4. Storm Operation Protocol: A comprehensive plan outlining the steps to be taken before, during, and after a storm to ensure public safety and minimize damage.

These measures enhance the community’s resilience and ensure Tulum is prepared for any eventuality.

The success of the committee’s efforts also hinges on active community involvement. Public awareness campaigns are being conducted to educate residents about the importance of preparedness and the steps they can take to protect themselves and their property. These campaigns include workshops, distribution of informational materials, and use of social media to reach a wider audience.

Residents are encouraged to stay informed about weather forecasts and have a personal emergency plan. This includes knowing the location of the nearest cyclone shelter, having a supply of essential items, and being ready to evacuate if necessary. By fostering a culture of preparedness, the committee aims to build a more resilient community.

Technology plays a crucial role in the committee’s strategy. Advanced weather monitoring systems are being utilized to track storms and provide real-time data to decision-makers. This enables more accurate predictions and timely alerts, allowing for better preparation and response.

The committee is also exploring using mobile apps to provide residents with up-to-date information on weather conditions, emergency alerts, and safety tips. These apps can help bridge the information gap and ensure everyone can access critical information when it matters most.
