The Advanced Naval Station in Tulum will be strategically located at the Tulum International Airport on a 1,200-hectare plot of land in Felipe Carrillo Puerto. This new airport will be able to handle four million passengers annually, making it the second-largest airport in the Yucatán Peninsula. Additionally, it will feature a multipurpose military airbase that will enhance the security of Mexican airspace.
The new Military Air Base (BAM) will play a crucial role in airspace surveillance along the southeastern border and serve as a strategic logistics point to provide support in case of natural disasters. This base will operate jointly between the Mexican Air Force and the Secretariat of the Navy, integrating into a military-naval installation with specific infrastructure for each department.
In addition to air surveillance operations, the BAM will host surveillance aircraft, interception planes, and helicopters, all complemented by a state-of-the-art radar system. These capabilities will enable a swift and efficient response to any threat or emergency in the region.
The existence of this airbase is fundamental for conducting surveillance actions along the country’s southeastern border and for providing support during natural disasters. The BAM will be essential for implementing Plan DN-III-E, which is activated in emergencies to provide assistance to the affected population.
With this new infrastructure, the goal is to mitigate the risks associated with the inability to care for the injured and displaced, transport cargo and essential goods, and conduct search and rescue operations. The presence of an advanced naval station will also increase the number of maritime operations by deploying land units and marine infantry in the Tulum jurisdiction area, thus protecting national interests.
The Tulum International Airport is being built as part of a broader effort to boost economic and tourism development in the region. With its capacity to handle many passengers and state-of-the-art infrastructure, this airport is expected to attract more visitors and promote local economic growth.
The municipality of Felipe Carrillo Puerto, which will host the airport and airbase, stands to benefit significantly from this development. Some expected benefits are job creation, infrastructure improvements, and increased regional security.
The Advanced Naval Station Type A project in Tulum is a strategic investment that will reinforce the security and operational capacity of the Mexican armed forces and contribute to regional development. The collaboration between the Mexican Air Force and the Secretariat of the Navy at this military airbase underscores the importance of a coordinated and effective national defense.
With the completion of the Tulum International Airport and the operationalization of the new airbase, the Tulum region is poised for a future of enhanced security, economic development, and resilience to natural disasters.
