At the exit of this meeting, the municipal president pointed out that since the appointment of Ricardo Morales Santos as secretary of Public Security, the rates of insecurity and homicides have dropped, since he was accompanied by a reduction in the hours of operation, until 1:30 am in the coastal zone and 2 am in the downtown area.
Castañón Trejo thanked the hoteliers and the private sector in general for respecting these rules, in order to impose greater order in the municipality.
Those present at this meeting announced that they will begin to carry out internal security work, such as placing more security cameras inside the establishments to assist the authorities in identifying any incident, in addition to resuming the project of providing bodycams to police officers and collaborating with tactical equipment.
David Ortiz Mena, president of the Tulum Hotel Association, emphasized that the measures implemented were necessary and have already yielded positive results. He also emphasized that “disorder contributes nothing to tourism”.
“Tulum has stood out as a tourist destination, but people opt for this place for reasons other than partying and disorder. Our visitors come for rest, for gastronomy, and for having the most visited archeological zone in the country”, he asserted.
For his part, Toni Cháves, president of the Riviera Maya Hotel Association, pointed out that the dialogue initiated today on security matters also serves to address other crucial issues for the destination, such as sargasso.
The businessman warned that the arrival of this algae is not only a bad image, but already an environmental problem, as it is an obstacle for turtle nesting and for the survival of coral. Last year they collected 80 thousand tons of sargassum and the forecast is that this year the arrival will be greater.
The hotels and the municipalities do their part, with their own resources and with the Environmental Sanitation Law, but this is not enough, because they need the support of the Federation, he affirmed. For this reason, all the hotel associations have already sent a letter to the Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Marcelo Ebrard, with a copy to the head of Sectur, Miguel Torruco, and to the President, to warn them of this problem.
