TULUM, México — Two officers from the Tulum Public Security and Citizen Protection Department (SSYPC) have come under scrutiny after a video surfaced online, allegedly showing them accepting money from drivers in the Aldea Zama tourist complex. The officers in vehicle 92135 are now the subjects of an internal investigation.
Following the video’s release, Tulum’s Mayor, Diego Castañón, instructed the SSYPC’s Internal Affairs division to open a case against the officers immediately. The investigation aims to determine whether the officers engaged in corrupt behavior and violated the police force’s disciplinary code.
In response, SSYPC Secretary, Captain José Roberto Bautista, reiterated the city’s commitment to a “zero tolerance” policy regarding such misconduct. “We will not tolerate corruption in any form. Incidents like this undermine public trust in the security forces, and we will act decisively,” Bautista declared in a public statement.
The investigation, launched as soon as the video gained attention online, is now in full swing. The officers involved will be called to present their version of events, though the consequences for such misconduct could be severe. Bautista warned that if the accusations are proven, the penalties could range from a 15-day suspension without pay to the permanent dismissal of the officers from the force.
Swift Action by Authorities
SSYPC wasted no time in responding to the situation. In addition to launching the internal investigation, the department’s director of social outreach quickly contacted the alleged victims in the video, urging them to file formal complaints against the officers involved.
“We reached out to the individuals affected in this video and are offering them full support in pursuing their claims,” Bautista noted. He also stressed that the department is committed to seeing justice served and ensuring that no member of the police force engages in illegal behavior.
Firm Disciplinary Measures
Under the leadership of Mayor Diego Castañón, Tulum’s administration has made transparency and accountability central to its governance. This incident will test the city’s resolve to enforce its zero-tolerance stance. Secretary Bautista assured that strict disciplinary procedures would be followed, emphasizing that no member of the police force would be exempt from punishment if found guilty of violating the law or the department’s code of ethics.
“Beyond just punishing these individuals, this case highlights the importance of strengthening internal controls and ensuring accountability within our police force,” Bautista added. He further noted that police officers are entrusted with protecting the community, and anyone who fails to uphold those duties will be removed from their positions.
Call for Public Cooperation
In his statement, Bautista also encouraged the public to continue reporting any instances of abuse or misconduct by security forces. “Citizen participation is vital in fighting corruption. We need your help to maintain transparency and trust in our institutions. If you witness any inappropriate behavior, please report it immediately. We will ensure that there is zero tolerance,” Bautista emphasized.
The investigation remains ongoing, and preliminary findings are expected in the coming days. In the meantime, the Tulum government has reiterated its commitment to maintaining an integrity-operating police force that ensures the safety and well-being of residents and tourists alike.
