Tulum’s Ecosystem Surprises Experts with Arrival and Release of 57 Loggerhead Turtle Hatchlings

TULUM, Mexico – In a remarkable natural event that unfolded over the past few weeks, the Xcacel-Xcacelito marine turtle sanctuary bore witness to a historic nesting of loggerhead turtles, resulting in the successful hatching and release of 57 hatchlings just last week.

Rocío Peralta, the head of the Department of Natural Resources at the Tulum Environmental Sustainability Directorate (DSA), emphasized the ecological significance of this occurrence, as loggerhead turtles are rarely spotted in the region. The nesting and subsequent hatching of their eggs mark a momentous milestone for the local ecosystem.

Peralta highlighted the Kanan Aak program, which has been in operation since 2009, aimed at the conservation of turtles. It is the first time that the arrival of this particular species of turtle has been recorded, as the sanctuary typically hosts the arrival of hawksbill, green, and loggerhead turtles.

“We share tremendous news that, for the first time in the Marine Turtle Conservation Program, we witnessed the release of 57 loggerhead turtles. As we are currently in nesting season, it is crucial that we respect the guidelines outlined in the official Mexican standard NOM-162-SEMARNAT-2012. Protect them, for marine turtles are endangered,” expressed Peralta.

She urged hoteliers and the general public to refrain from disturbing the turtles, respect their habitats, and promptly report any instances of harm inflicted upon these creatures. Peralta emphasized that any activities posing a risk to this species are considered federal offenses.

The Xcacel-Xcacelito marine turtle sanctuary has long been recognized as a vital nesting site for various turtle species. The successful hatching and release of the loggerhead hatchlings are a testament to the dedication and tireless efforts of those involved in turtle conservation in Tulum.
